From Treehugger.com: Yoga for School Credit
Yoga for School Credit--Gym Class Just Got Way Fun
Here's one that would've rocked my socks off as a kid: yoga--in school. Doubly so if it replaced the dreaded P.E., where military push-ups and getting pegged by a dodge ball made exercise as much fun as the dirty sock smell in the locker room.

Canadian schools seem to have a cool thing going on introducing 'tweens and teens to yoga time on the mat. Beyond that, they are making it an accepted part of the curriculum where they can earn school credit.

I know I could have posted this in the Health forum, but I also know how some of them react to anything "alternative" ;)

I would have liked having this as an option way back in the 1970s, but as I live in the South, well, you know "adults" react to things like this... :P

1. Hey you--how you doing?
Interesting post--I never thought of how far we've come with something as "freaky" as yoga--that it's now an accepted practice, when mere decades ago it was laughed at by the mainstream.

I have seen a lot of focus on yoga in schools and daycare in the local news here. Who says we're not making progress? :P

P.S. How's your kitteh doing? Did you get a chance to go to the vet?

2. I'm doing fine. I'd be doing better if I practiced yoga
:P

Oh, I watched "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" on hulu.com and will be recording the new ones on ABC until it's over. In addition to having bought a set of books on healthier eating by Susan Smith Jones, Jamie's energy always gets me psyched up at improving my cooking and eating habits, too :D

I don't watch the local news here (I haven't in years because I can't stand the sensationlist style of "reporting") so I don't know if yoga is implemented here or not. My guess is not much. The Baptists throw a conniption fit any time something "occult" is suggested, like meditation, or, horror of horrors, sex-education.

Kitteh is at the vet even as I type this, though I expect to be picking him up in an hour or so. This is just the follow-up exam, since he ended his antibiotics on Saturday. He's certainly much better from observing him. Eating better, drinking his water and active again. I still can't get him to stop trying to lay around the wheels of my desk chair here, no matter how much fur he's lost from me moving it around (it's not much, and I don't move if he's around the base, making it difficult for me to get out of the chair sometimes...)

I need to send you something on my story as I did a "restart" on the main-character's day to include something I read about in my book on spirits (something called "Dirt-Woman" if you want to look it up.) It adds a little more to the story and spiritual aspect :)

3. I feel quite guilty
I TiVo an hour-long yoga show every weekday...and then delete them.

I heard Jamie Oliver's show is good--I'll check it out.

Sending light for kitteh--what ended up being the problem?

I'll look for your update and I'll put the book on my list--unfortunately my "to read" pile is getting taller again. I have three books to review for the magazine, and I bought a book on Brigid but haven't even cracked it yet. Le sigh.

4. I found that ironically funny
and something I might do, or just leave it on the DVR for a year before I even look at it ;)
I do keep my copies of "Jamie at Home" on the DVR and rewatch them. He's such a great cook :)

Kipper had a minor urinary tract infection, but it was enough to throw off his appetite and he lost almost two pounds (from 13.7 to 12). I'll have to ask them about getting the weight back on him, what their recommendations are. I'm waiting to hear from them to pick him up this morning (what's left of it...)

The health books also have recipes (one of them is mostly a cookbook/raw-food book, with health info thrown in) so for me, I'll read a little, try a little and read some more. I'm not that motivated to read them all the way through before I start to utilize what I've learned. They make good reference books if you get them. She has a website, too, and I bought them through HayHouse.

Do y'all ever go out to coffee houses or cafes? Because I've found them to be some of the best places to just sit and read or write :D

5. suggestion on Tivo
Tivo the 1/2 hour long shows instead. There's more of a chance you will actually use them. When you fast forward through all the ads they are only twenty minutes long. Our crappy Comcast box went out and now I don't have the 1/2 hour kick boxing/tai chi combo that I loved to do. I'll keep looking for it to repeat.................

6. I was going to suggest the channel "Veria"
but their yoga show is also an hour long: http://www.veria.com/veria-hd-on-tv-schedule.html

I haven't checked PBS lately, so don't know if they have half-hour yoga shows or not...

7. I got college credit for yoga in the late 70's
from Temple University.

More 'controversial' back then was when me and two of my girl friends took weight-lifting in high school. I think we were the first girls to do that there and had to get 'special' permission.

8. University credit I can understand, for any era,
but grade-school is another matter. Parents feel they're more "in control" of what their children are taught and more likely to fuss over something like yoga or meditation. Not everywhere, of course, just much more likely in the South.

I looked at the original site that Treehugger quotes, and skimmed the comments. It appears yoga is being taught in grade-schools elsewhere in the US, however, that is mostly on the west coast, where it isn't so "radical" ;)

9. That is
one of the best ideas I've heard in about forever. When I think of the difference it makes in people, well, just wow. I've found it's easier to do if you take it in a class with others, instead of recording and deleting it. :P I can relate.

Tai Chi is cool, too. In college I got to do an experiment of sorts. I worked as a set builder in the theater and whenever we had to build one for an opera, it could be pretty intense. So, I got to be foreman one time and I had the team do 20 min. of Tai Chi before we started our day. It was amazing how much better everyone got along and how much more smoothly the work flowed. Ahh, the good old days. :)
