My cat has a dangerous plastic fetish... any advice?
Edited on Mon May-16-05 08:30 AM by expatriot
She is always licking and trying to chew off stuff plastic... plastic wrappers and plastic bags mostly. Of course we try and keep it away from her but she is a cat, she can get anywhere, when she finds something plastic she is all over it. I am just wondering if this is common and what can we do to combat it? There is a million bad things that could happen to her by ingesting some plastic or choking, etc. Please help!

1. Hmmmm
What if you left out a plastic bag that you had treated with bitter apple?

3. Mine too!
He just LOVES to chew on plastic bags. I'm not sure if it's the crinkly noise he loves so much, or the taste. I'm careful to always put my plastic bags away, but he's learned to open my cupboards. I have to go get the child locks now. Let me know how the bitter apple trick works.

4. You might want to pick up paper bags for him
If you don't want to go to the pet shop and get him one of those crinkly tunnel toys, paper bags is one good way to wean him off plastic bags.
A cat can suffocate if he gets inside a plastic bag....no different from a human.

8. He has all sorts of crinkly bags, toys,
and everything else fun for the feline under the sun. I think he does it because he knows it upsets me. It's quite an effective way to wake me up in the morning. I'm quite aware of the health risks/hazards.

5. Hey, is the cat in question the one in your avatar?
Because he looks like a tabby point (half siamese, half tabby), that is what my Sonora is, a tabby point. I wonder if it runs in the family. (the guy in my avatar is tenny, her adopted brother).

7. Different cat
The one in my avatar is (was) a blue point wedge siamese. She died from cancer in March.

The one with the plastic fetish is also a blue point siamese, but he's an apple head.

9. Not necessarily (in the family)
my lilac point Siamese doesn't bother plastic. He's a foil ball kinda guy.

6. My DOG likes plastic bags
AND Bitter Apple. We bought it to stop her from chewing the coffee table and she just laid there and licked it off!

If I only had a "shake your head in dismay" smilie...

10. Try a different brand
There are some dogs who like certain brands of bitter apple... but I've not ever encountered a dog who liked *all* brands of bitter apple. :) Try a different brand. Better yet, take the dog to the pet store with you and let her 'taste test' brands off your finger.
