we're getting another FOSTER greyhound on Monday
got the call last night -- another nine greyhounds are arriving on Monday

After our experience with Boo (quite a handful) we asked for a calm little dog to foster this time around.

We are suppose to get Abilene, a small fawn female and yes she is supposedly on the calm side -- we'll know more on Monday

UPDATE on BOO: He's doing fine in his new home. His new family just loves him and he's attached himself to the husband. Meanwhile, the family went back a week or so ago and adopted another greyhound.

3. Thank you! That's a wonderful thing!
It's very generous of you to volunteer to be a greyhound foster parent.

5. you're so awesome
for fostering another greyhound! :woohoo:

I have a friend who adopted a male greyhound and is fostering a female until she's placed. They're great dogs, although they can be a handful!

6. when we adopted Sunny

(this is Sunny doing his impression of a Borg)

Sunny was previously adopted but returned a year later because of a divorce. He blended into our home with no big problems (except for a few days of diarrhea)

We then went ahead and told the organization we would be available for fostering. Last September we fostered a sweet little female - Mint - had her about 2 months before she was adopted.

In February we fostered Boo -- and yes he was a handful, sweet disposition, but quite the handful.

Right after Boo was adopted we were asked to foster again - but opted out because we needed a break and a chance to recharge from our experience with Boo.

So now we are ready again -- this new foster is coming from the same kennel as Mint - and these dogs have a reputation for being sweeties, better behaved and calm.

7. Do your dogs have a problem
with destroying everything in sight? My friend's greyhounds (although she thinks it's mostly her male dog) eat/chew/tear up anything that isn't nailed down in her apartment when she's gone. They've gone through countless plastic water bottles, a Britta filter, a bottle of Tide, Bit-O-Honey (wrappers and all), gummy bears, etc. Any thoughts on how to correct this problem?

9. sounds like boredom
if the "suspected" greyhound isn't neutered -- she should get him neutered - this will calm him down after a few weeks

he also sounds bored - usually destructive chewing is because the dog is looking for something to do

she needs to dog proof the house - moving items where he can't get to them, or barricading off rooms. We had to do this with our previous foster dog.

and she needs to provide subsitutes for the stuff he does chew -- like toys that he can chew. Most greyhounds like stuffed animals - especially with squeakers in them. When they are in training for racing the handlers use stuffed toys and squeakers.

she'll also have to go into some behavior modification training - removing the "no-no" object when she sees the dog going after it and immediately subsituting an "approved" toy for it -- won't do any good to yell at the dog after the fact -- the dog has to be caught in the act. We also went through this with the previous foster dog -- he would head for the trash, laundry or other "no-no's", we would immediately follow up with an firm NO, make him go to his bed and give him a toy to chew followed by lavish praise. Took awhile for him to catch on, but he did learn.

obedience classes would also be very helpful -- she should contact her vet or animal shelter to find out if they can recommend a class

10. Is lure coursing available in her area? It is amazing what a little
running can do for a sighthound! How about agility or flyball?

11. Thanks for your help!
I'll pass the info on to my friend. Her greyhound is neutered, although recently (just before she got him) so that might explain some of his behavior.

12. takes about 8 weeks for a greyhound
to settle in -- especially if newly adopted as they have no idea what it is to live in a house

we had to move the "treat buckets" and "food bins" out of the kitchen because Boo figured out how to get into them

I just spent the morning cleaning the house and "re-dog-proofing" it in preparation for the foster dog's arrival tomorrow night

14. Abilene arrived last night
what a sweet little girl -- dark fawn with "eyeliner"

she's a bit on the shy side (but that will change as she gets accustomed to being in a house)

she took to the crate with no problem and had a good night's sleep

she is in dire need of a bath -- might do that tonight or wait a couple of days as we don't want to stress her out too much all at once.

she follows us around like a shadow, but we are getting smiles and tail wags out of her

yes - pics will be available soon
