Update on Murphy: It's tonsillitis!
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 06:38 PM by livetohike
I didn't even know dogs had tonsils :eyes:. Murphy spent the day at the vet office because they had to sedate him to examine him. On the way to the office, he sneezed and there were several drops of blood.

This of course, sent me into a panic.

The vet took two x-rays of his skull (to check the nasal cavities), examined his teeth and looked down his throat. She said that one tonsil was swollen and when she touched it, it bled. She gave him an antibiotic shot and sent us home with two types of antibiotics. Three weeks worth for one and two weeks worth for the other.

She did a CBC and the heart worm/lyme panel. He has been positive for Lyme disease for two years, so that was no surprise. No heart worm. The CBC was within limits.

Thank you everyone for your advice and support. No wonder the little dude didn't want to eat his dry food!

1. This is a new one on me, too. Poor Murphy.
Will he have to have the tonsils removed? If so, does he get all the ice cream he wants?

Seriously, I hope that all works out well. Hugs to Murphy.

2. The vet said they rarely remove tonsils
He had a big scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert :-). I don't want to create another problem with too much dairy though. He had rice, chicken, baked sweet potato and broth for dinner. The vet said I could give him his dry food if I made sure it was pretty moist. I think I will wait a day or two for that though.

Thanks Curmudgeoness :hi:.

8. Thanks! He seems much better already but
he isn't tolerating the Doxycycline (antibiotic) well. They are coming back up on him about an hour after I give them to him. I'm waiting for a call back from the vet. Otherwise, his energy level is nearly normal and he is eating what I give him. :-)
