Silly Ninja Clowder story...
It was raining the other night, and the boys were kept inside by the weather...
their choice, not mine.
They didn't look too happy, so I distributed catnip- can't go wrong with catnip with this crowd.:bounce: They licked it up, rolled, purred and enjoyed their buzz.

OK, that's about a half-hour gone, it's still coming down pretty hard, and the boys are looking bored and giving me the "Entertain us, why don't you?" look.

OK...I find the old favorite cat toys...jingly balls, disemboweler, bat-about, crackly butterfly...stuff I've seen them enjoy in the past.

"Here ya go, guys...knock yourselves out."

WRONG.

The LOOK I got...whoa. :wtf:
Not only had I committed a MAJOR kitty faux pas, but apparantly I had insulted their intelligence.

"We are not babies anymore, lady. We are tertiary PREDATORS, obligate carnivores, meat-eaters, top-of-the-food-chain, accomplished and skilled HUNTERS. And you offer us...TOYS?"
:nuke:

They grudgingly accepted my apology and took their snotty-ass royal selves outside soon afterward.

After all, what's a little rain to such wild mighty predators such as they? :eyes:

They came in about a half hour later, damp, disgruntled, and slunk off to their various 'bedrooms' while pretending I wasn't there.
Riktor had the hardest time of this part of the performance, since he chose to sleep in my lap...

...or maybe it was me, trying not to laugh.

Cats...
Ya gotta love 'em.

2. What is a "disemboweler"? Is that a cat toy I need for my Gang of Fur?
Or does it refer to an actual cat?

Great story, by the way. Cats are fun by themselves and even more fun in groups.

3. It's a toy I made...
It's long, kinda rat-shaped and stuffed with batting and catnip.
It's long enough for them to hold in their front paws, bite at, and kick at wildly with their back feet, thus 'disemboweling' it (which is why I make them out of a tough fabric). ;)

It's also light enough for them to carry around as a 'prize'...although this is usually reserved for the batabout...similar to the disemboweler, only smaller, round, and made for trajectory, not 'killing'.

I (firmly!) stitch a little bell onto the 'nose'...I remember reading somewhere that the bell has a similiar frequency to the sounds that their prey animals make and so it fires those particular neurons in their furry little brains.

Figured since I sew, I've got the stuff on hand anyway and I can make the stuffed toys a LOT cheaper than what they charge at the stores...

4. Cool! You should make a bunch of them and sell 'em at pet shops
or, of course, the Internet.

I bought some toy rats and mice at Ikea - their kids' department has a lot of inexpensive stuffed animals, and they had all these little rats and mice. So for a few bucks I bought some and left them in the cats' toy basket. They were a huge hit - even though these toys don't have catnip in them the cats love them and carry them all over the house. Every morning I have to collect all the rats and mice and put them back in the basket. They aren't being disemboweled, though (maybe because they don't have catnip); they just get carried around.

Oddly, I've never actually seen the cats move these toys. They just get moved.

Don't you just love cats? They're such characters.
