Help! I found two stray dogs, but I can't keep them!
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 12:36 PM by Frogtutor
I've called animal control in two cities, and checked the paper to see if anyone's lost them. I've called EVERY shelter in a 100 mile radius looking for a no-kill shelter that can take them; they are all either full, or numbers have been disconnected, etc. I'm going to put up some signs, but I have a feeling they were dumped. (we live in a semi-rural area).

I am currently keeping them in my garage because I have four dogs of my own, one of which doesn't play well with others. I have threatened to replace two of them with the strays.

They are INCREDIBLY sweet, and very well-behaved. One is a large male, and I'm thinking Border Collie/Brittany Spaniel/Australian Sheppard (?). The other is a female, somewhat smaller, and I'm thinking the same, but maybe some German Shorthair Pointer in her. They look like they MIGHT be related. The female is either currently, or recently been pregnant. Here are pictures:

I'm at my wits' end; they can't live in my garage forever, I can't seem to find a place that will take them but not kill them, and it will break my heart (and my son's) to have to take them somewhere they might be euthanized.

I live near Fort Worth, TX, and I'm willing to drive to anywhere in the DFW metroplex.

Does anyone have any suggestions? ANY help is greatly appreciated!

1. What sweeties!
I would take those two pictures and make yourself a flyer asking someone to take them in. I bet if you interview a few people you could find them a nice home. I would suggest posting the flyer at local grocery stores and places where families go.

Good luck with your quest, you are doing a very kind thing. O8)

4. If you give them to complete strangers, please screen
them very carefully. Quite often lots of the free to good homes dogs end up as bait dogs for dog-fighting rings.

3. Go to YahooGroups.com.
You will have to register with them. But then you can put in a search for animal rescue groups in your state. Then post at their message boards to find homes for the dogs. There are lots of them in Texas

6. The top one definitely looks border collie
The second one looks like it has either Australian Shepherd or possibly cattle dog. Both herding dogs, so it's possible they're from a farm somewhere in the area.

I would get our local rescue to take them but we live in North Carolina. Keep looking. There are a ton of rescue groups around your area. I'll post a message on a cattle dog list I belong to and see if anyone can take them.

7. Thanks everyone, I've still got the dogs...
We're rotating shifts in the backyard. We let our two trouble-making females into the house (which they LOVE) and let the strays run around in the backyard with our other two.

I'm fairly positive that the male (top photo) is an Australian Shepherd. The problem with breed specific rescue groups is that they will only be interested in him. I really don't want to split them up; they are obviously companions, and love each other very much.

It seems like I have emailed and called every shelter and rescue group in the state and then some. Mostly I get that they are full, and can't take anymore in. I've lost track of who I've called and emailed, so I'll keep trying the links ya'll send me!

We went to San Antonio last weekend, and took the two strays with us because we couldn't leave them in the garage the whole time. My husband was loading a truck on a trailer when a family stopped and asked if we would sell the Australian Shepherd! I explained the situation, and let her know that we didn't want to split them up. She said they couldn't take two dogs, so they left.

Well, I'm still working on it; keep the suggestions coming!
Thanks again!

9. Update: Good news!
We have some friends who live in our neighborhood that are supposed to take the dogs! Their dog was killed by a car around last New Year's Eve. N saw the strays one day, and said she really wished they could take them, but they don't have a fence up yet. Well, J (her husband) hung out at our house all day Saturday, and fell in love with them. So, he's supposed to be getting his dog run put together to take them.

What's really ironic is that it was J's son from his first marriage, who lives with his mother (E) just down our street, that found the dogs in the first place, and pushed them off on us when his mom and stepdad (V) wouldn't take them!

Sorry, probably too much info, but just wanted those of you who are interested to know! Thanks for all of your help and suggestions!

10. That's great news!
They are so cute and you will be able to see them as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they managed a "break out" to come back to your place one day. :-)
