Will it hurt a dog to eat a tomato?
Jake, a 2 year old terrier/pug mix we rescued about 4-5 months ago, is a wonderful dog, good natured, friendly with everyone and well socialized with other animals. I have one problem with him - he seems to eat anything he can get his jaws/paws on. We're careful about it (especially after last Sunday when he stole and ate my entire strawberry cream cheese bagel while I was in the bathroom - the evidence was on his snoot), but now I went outside to my garden and found several half eaten tomatoes. I thought it might be a groundhog until last night when I caught him biting a tomato.

I know grapes are toxic to dogs but does anyone know about tomatoes?

1. I don't think the tomato is harmful. I knew a dog who loved
to go into his owner's garden and help himself. Even ate a whole cabbage!

2. Our neighbor narced on our dog for that
Sent Mr. Laurel and e-mail wanting us to know that the Golden Retriever of Doom was putting his front paws on the fence around our garden (about 2 feet high) and eating the peppers next to the fence. I had actually realized it after 10 ready-to-be-picked peppers disappeared one night.

3. Funny - except when it's your own garden
:-) My dogs have learned to eat blueberries (wild) right off the bush and this summer they discovered these ground growing wild raspberries. They look like two cows grazing along the ground.

I know that grapes, onions, raisins and chocolate are bad for dogs. I think every other fruit and veggie are okay. My dogs love watermelon.

7. My lab-chow moose dog
once got into my pepper patch and ate a Habanero plant and two Thai bird pepper plants-didn't faze him a bit.

4. Not sure about dogs, but
my cat Bwana LOVED tomatoes -- to the point that I had to hide them in a cupboard with a child proof lock on it.

The vet said they were okay to eat as long as they weren't the mainstay of the cat's diet.

Probably won't hurt Jake to have some tomatoes -- let him eat them if he loves them -- and put wire around the ones you want to save to eat yourself.

5. It's funny what they get interested in. My cat likes olives, and
almond brittle.
I've seen those chihuahua dogs gobble down hot chili peppers.
I can't imagine a tomato hurting him at all. In many cases if it isn't too right for them, it comes out later, sometimes not much later.

8. Tomatoes are part of the Nightshade family, and can aggravate
arthritis and allergies. I'm unable to find the study at the moment, I believe it was done at UC Davis.

9. I sure hope not
Last night I was picking tomatoes and while I was working one side of the bush, Maddy was working the other side. :)
