Pup is doing better, but stools are still kinda loose.

Hello!

The day before my pup's birthday (Aug 1), his tummy was completely out of whack. In rapid-fire succession, he was puking and having diarrhea. It was apparent he did not feel good.

After a night of cuddles, he seemed to be better. I gave him just scant doses of food. Subsequent stools were a bit firmer than diarrhea, but still loose.

He is back to his happy, playful self, but I'm wondering if I did the right thing with respect to food. Should I have put him on something like chicken and rice first? He eats Solid Gold Adult Maintenance Holistic Blendz, and has for some time. Oh, and he's 12 years old.

ETA I am adding some canned pumpkin to his food, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

2. Canned pumpkin works for both, as long as it is 100% canned pumpkin

and not pumpkin pie filler. I volunteer for a rescue so I always have pumpkin stocked. He should only be getting a spoonful or 2 with each meal. If it isn't working, I would try taking a stool sample to the vet to have it checked.

It is possible that it is the food, it could be too rich for him, especially if his tummy was a bit bad. Using chicken or hamburger with rice is good to put them on a bland diet for a while, then start mixing the food back in. Make sure the chicken or hamburger is boiled to get all of the fat out.

3. Hope he's doing better today

I use the advice from "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats" - a great book I've had since it was published in 1996. It's saved me a lot of money in vet bills.

For diarrhea, the book advises to fast for 24 hours and then introduce cooked white rice mixed with boiled hamburger or boiled skinless chicken breast. It's two parts of rice to one part meat. Feed in small amounts every four hours for two days. After two days, mix this rice/meat mixture with the usual food you give your pet about 1/4 regular food, the next day 1/2 regular food, the next day 3/4 regular food and on the fourth day back to normal.

Disclaimer: I have never exactly followed this regime. Luckily all of my dogs have either cleared up on their own or were back to normal after a couple days of rice/chicken meat.

4. We usually cook rice and mix it with their kibble when they

have upset tummys. Seems to help.

5. I'll try fasting first, then introducing the chicken and rice.

He sure acts like he feels well. He wants to play ball, roll around, enjoy chew toys, etc. He also wants to eat, too!

6. My advice - Drop off a sample at your vet

if it doesn't clear up in short order. My Buster has been having issues and they found he had roundworms.
