With so many people losing their jobs and having financial problems, I thought I should post this.
The American Animal Hospital Association Helping Pets Fund offers grants to pet owners who are experiencing financial hardship and can't afford veterinary care. They also offer grants for the care of pets that have been abandoned.
If your vet's practice is AAHA-accredited, they may apply for financial assistance on your behalf. There are certain eligibility requirements that must be met and they will only grant $500 per year. There's a lifetime grant maximum of $1000 per family. Details can be found
here.
If you happen to have a few dollars to spare, you could donate to the fund. When I lost my poodle last year, our vet donated to the fund in Maestro's memory. I was very touched. It's a nice thing to do if you know someone who lost a pet recently. :-)
So ... if you or someone you know needs a little help paying for care for a sick or injured pet, ask your vet about applying to the program. I know $500 isn't a lot if your pet requires a hospital stay, but every little bit helps.
