Overweight Dog Frozen To Sidewalk
A nearly 120-pound dog is alive after being frozen to a sidewalk overnight in Wisconsin.

Authorities say the dog probably survived because he was insulated by layers of fat.

Jiffy, an 11-year-old border collie, is safe and warm now and temporarily shacking up at the local Humane Society.

Police say Jiffy got stuck to the ground after his owner let him outside. Jiffy is 60 pounds overweight and couldn't get up.

The District Attorney has the case and is deciding whether to file charges.

The Humane Society says they've gotten more than a half dozen calls from people who want to adopt Jiffy.

This makes me sick, but at least there's a happy ending. There are lots of border collie lovers around here who will take better care of this dog.

2. I saw a show about the overweight dogs in Great Britain.

They charge the owners with animal cruelty if they do not help the dog lose weight after they have been cited.

There was a dachshund that was so overweight that its belly was all scraped from rubbing on the ground.

I can understand that there are people who equate food with love, but at some point it MUST become obvious that
you are doing more harm than good.

The idea of a Border Collie, of all breeds, being 60 lbs overweight is inconceivable. Truth be told, by Border Collie Standards this dog was close to 80 lbs overweight! Their standard weight is between 30 and 40 lbs!! This dog weighed at least 3 times what it should have!

I think this poor creature needs to be rehomed to someone who will feed it properly and exercise it.

3. I can't even picture it.
Of course it could be a border collie mix.

Anyway, her neighbors said she really loved the dog and was not abusive to it. So when its butt froze to the ice, she just decided- I'll deal with it tomorrow? The weight problem is bad enough, but this is Wisconsin and we're getting below zero at night... you don't leave a dog out in the cold if you care about it. Somebody would have helped her if she asked.

5. You hit me point azackly...
An overweight Border Collie?

Thought those dogs were so active that it would be hard to keep weight on them!
They're working dogs and love/need/want to run run run run run all the time...

6. I know there is more to the story
but I have to wonder if people are just so poor that they feed their pets the lowest end of the food chain (cheapo, garbage pet food) and there is something in this that is making cats and dogs overweight. I mean look at the correlation between McDonald's and low quality pet food? Creatures that regularly consume bad food become obese.

Something tells me that we are not out of the woods concerning the pet food scandals.
