The Grande Dame vet update
Our Grande Dame of the house -- Kudra, 19year (almost 20) old cat -- has an overactive thyroid (not unusual in an old cat) -- she eats well, but the thyroid problem causes excessive weight loss

She was diagnosed with it back in November and has been on meds ever since.

Took her to the vet yesterday for bloodwork -- won't know the results until Monday or Tuesday -- but she's gained over a pound!

Meanwhile, we also asked the vet to clip her nails -- and the feisty Grand Dame tried biting the vet three times and a bit of a tussle when vet tried to draw blood. The vet quipped -- "well, we can see she's feeling better."

1. I keep hearing more and more about animals
with thyroid problems. I pray they are not the canaries in the coal mines, because it seems like many people have thyroid issues these days. (I am hypothyroid myself) My best friend's golden is hypo too, he has tons of allergies.

Glad to hear your cat is doing better, and biting the vet ;)

2. My almost 17 yr old cat has an overactive
thyroid. She was diagnosed about 3 years ago and has been on daily meds. The difference in her attitude was amazing, you can tell that she just feels better.

3. vet called yesterday
Kudra's liver/kidney numbers are high. She has to go on special food and some more meds.

But at 19 years old, it is not unusual for these problems to occur. My partner has had her since she was a kitten rescued from a shelter, and my partner is a bit upset.

Don't know what to tell her -- Kudra's had a long and pampered life, she's still in fairly good shape and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort -- we'll do what we can for as long as we can.

but the specter is hanging around...
