Latest cat food experiences
Lately Pad Thai has had hairball problems causing him to have a rough coat and throwing up, because of Lorien's expert advice and suggestions I tried Organix cat food. Just 10 days and what a difference! His coat is now silky smooth again and he hasn't thrown up in days. My older cat, Lily is now more energetic and loving and sticks like glue to me, jumping up on the bed more freely than before (mostly due to glucosimine) and her coat is shiny and sleek as well.

I used to feed the cats Science Diet hairball light, but quit it a few months ago because it was making Lily so fat. I've tried a number of different foods, including Purina Indoor, Purina Vitality, (which Lily likes), Waltham Siamese blend, etc., but the cats like the Organix. We'll have to see how Lily works out on the weight, but with the glucosimine she is moving around better so I think she'll start to get more exercise than before.

1. I'm so glad that it's helping!
My Miro has a weight problem too, and the holistic foods (he gets about six different brands, and Organix is one of them) have helped him shed about six pounds. I think most of the weight came off because he is feeling better, playing again (and he's almost 16), and just generally seems happier. He still could lose a few pounds (at his heaviest, he was 27 pounds!) but still, he's in the best shape he's been in since he was a kitten!

I still can't help but wonder if I would still have my beloved kitty Peewee with me had I discovered holistic foods sooner. He was finicky, and only liked "junk foods". I fed him Iams , Nutro, and Science diet, thinking that was the best I could do for him (mixed with Friskies and Fancy Feast so he would eat them). One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't know then what I know now about feline nutrition. It makes me feel a bit better knowing that Pad Thai and Lily might add a few years to their lives because you've discovered "the good stuff" for them before they've developed any serious health issues. This type of nutrition is so new that nobody knows how much a cat's lifespan can be extended by it. My vet said that his oldest feline patient was 27 years old, so who knows?

2. Yes
I think if I can get Lily more mobile again with the glocosimine(Abyssinians have problems with their back legs as they get older and she's 14, so she comes by it naturally) she will lose some weight. One of the reasons I wanted to take the cats outside was to see if I could slim us girls down and give us an active lifestyle! But Pad Thai is too adverturous to risk that again.

The big difference has been Pad Thai's coat. It's luxurious soft and smooth like butter again. The Purina foods weren't doing that for him.

3. Is there a link to where I could get Organix? Norman needs to lose
some weight and coffs up fur balls. Right now both cats eat iams weight control/ hairball care. It sounds like Organix might be a good alternative.
:hi:

5. Iams is a big RED company, too
they also have been taking heat recently for their brutal animal testing methods (one DUer has a link to a site about it). I'm pretty sure Organix is Blue.

Call your local independant health food store and pet boutiques to see if they carry it. I get mine from a local natural health food store for pets called Pookies Bow wow bakery.

6. I have had really good luck with Royal Canin
foods for cats. It's a bit hard to find, but my cats really love the taste and their fur is very glossy.

I doubt it is organic, but it is a step above the regular stuff for sure. I know alot of professional breeders feed it to their lovelies.

I just have this thing against lamb in pet food. Sheep and lamb were the first to exhibit scrapie, and recently it was written that they found prions in sheep muscle. My own strangeness is showing.

7. Royal Canin is Canadian
which is probably one reason it's better. I let Oberon have some Royal Canin Maine Coon 31 sometimes, but since it's not made of human grade meats (the meat they use is full of scraps and meat that has spoiled, as most pet foods are) I don't feed it to him all the time. Because it's Canadian I think it contains fewer antibiotics, and I don't think it contains corn products (nearly all commercial American pet foods do), so that's a plus. That brand and "Blue" are the only ones I'll buy if stuck with only Petco or Petsmart to choose from.
