What are CHINESE SHARPEIS like?
Me and hubby want to adopt another doggy. Just curious about sharpeis; it's one of the dogs I found for adoption. She's roly-poly. :)

1. I've heard good and bad
http://www.playdog.com/sharpei.html

Activity level high

Watchdog yes, excellent! very territorial and protective

Trainability can be stubborn (or "independent", depending on your view); training sessions should be brief & without force; respond to praise & food (don't we all!)

Good with children? generally if socialized (especially if bred by knowledgeable breeder); important to teach kids how to approach dog (they're easily startled due to poor peripheral vision); aggressive tendencies have been greatly diminished by breeders over the last couple of decades.

Ideal owner predictable, strong, commanding leader with time to train, socialize (with the dog), and exercise

Suggestions: early socialization and obedience training is mandatory, research breeders carefully.

3. Thansk for the info.
Sounds a lot like my dog. personality-wise, and she had skin problems too all through her first year-and-a-half.

She'd fit in well here. I suspect our choice will be sort of impromtu, though. :)

5. Skin problems, ear infections, allergies
and some people are allergic to the hair.

They can be very stubborn, but I have heard they are excellent one owner dogs.

6. Mutts are generally in better health
so that is something to consider. They also usually have more of an "even-tempered" personality!

7. Some type of mutt
is what we'll probably end up with. My current baby is a mutt, too, and perfect. :)
