Can someone help me find
Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 03:17 PM by beam me up scottie
low cost cages for cats at our new shelter?

I live in South Central Kentucky and shelters that take cats are few and far between.

It is completely legal to poison and shoot strays (or pets) because they are considered vermin.

I was recently told (again) by my landlord that I had to get rid of the stray kittens I have been feeding for the past couple of months or he would kill them.

Many frantic phone calls and emails later, I found a shelter two counties over that can take them.

The reason the brand new shelter in my own county couldn't?

We don't have CAGES.

Apparently, the director (not an animal lover but a politician) is pinching pennies and won't commit.

There is money left over from a grant we received, but I need to convince him he is getting a HELL of a deal or we'll never get them.

We haven't been successful in trying to find good deals on the internet and I know how to shop, it's part of my regular job.

The local PetSmart has donated two playpens but it's not enough.

Does anyone have any ideas or contacts for damaged and/or bargain basement cages?

I am prepared to build them if anyone has plans that specify the materials needed and instructions-but they must be safe for cats.

Any help you can give me would really be appreciated because people are killing these furry babies indiscriminately and we can do nothing to help them until we have the proper facilities.

The shelter in the next county over is euthanizing cats every day, but at least they can take them in and make sure that they don't suffer if they're not adapted.

Thanks in advance.

1. That's a lousy situation
The only thing I could suggest is seeing if there is a freecycle group in your area, www.freecycle.org. I think you can also post 'wanteds' on there, too. Or check local classifieds. Any local online bulletin boards?

Good Luck!!

4. Thanks.
Unfortunately, they don't recycle ANYTHING around here, not even cans, bottles or paper.

I'll keep checking to boards though.

where are you? If you are closer to Lexington they might have a group too.

I wish I could help, maybe if you can spread the word in your area people will start donating more items or money. We have yard sales and bake sales and ask gas stations and other buisness' to put messages on their boards to drive up fundraising.

5. I wish.
We're in South Central Kentucky.

20 years behind the rest of the country when it comes to animal rights and the concept of owner responsibility.

In my county, we haven't even reached the stage where we can concentrate on education and offer low cost spay/neuter.

Up until now, "Animal Control" was called in to exterminate unwanted pets.

It hurts like hell to have to deal with this, you have no idea.

I suffer from depression anyway and I can't even describe what this does to me.

I was forced to give up foster kittens I had been bottle feeding earlier this summer because a neighbor called the sheriff and told him they had "mange".

They weren't even weaned yet and there wasn't so much as a flea on any of them.

Now this.

Ignorance and contempt for life is everywhere.

Understanding and education haven't a chance, it seems.

All we can do is take each day as it comes and treat each life with as much respect and compassion as we can.

I've been told that I can't save the world.

But I'm not giving up.

6. I know.
I can't write about this often because it kills me.

I've cried for days and slept not at all.

Sometimes I think I can't be the only one who posts on DU just to keep from thinking about the things that devastate us.

I can't tell you how what a relief it was and how euphoric it felt to get that email telling me someone would take them.

I'm originally from Vermont where no kill shelters have been around for years.

Trap, neuter and release is the norm for ferals and lower income people can work off their vet bills by volunteering at a local shelter.

This is a horrible place to live and it makes the very few people who really care about animals that much more precious.

7. I really admire you for your efforts
Don't give up. I just wish you had more like- minded people to help with this struggle. Can you get television coverage for the animal's plight?

8. Thank you.
The local news station does feature some of the adaptable pets but there are so many...

I was at the shelter Saturday and it broke my heart, there were so many dogs and cats...

I can't stand to think about the cruelty and rejection they suffered because humans think of them as disposable commodities...

And they were the lucky ones, at least their end would be humane.

I sat out in my car and just sobbed.

On my way home, I passed no more than five pet stores that were selling animals.

Their is no justice in the world, it seems.

9. See if your local paper will let you run a low-cost classified ad asking
for used crates.

Most pet owners use a crate when their dogs are puppies and then never use it again.

They end up clogging up the garage or giving them away finally.

You could probably help people simplify their lives by relieving them of their old crates. :)

Bless you for helping the kitties.

11. Go to YahooGroups.com and register.
There is a group called Animal Wish List. Search For it. Then sign up and post what you need.
