1. At a retail outlet near you
I'm sure it can be purchased through New Egg too: http://www.newegg.com (as well as many, many online software retailers).

If you're looking for a free alternative, I can recommend Open Office: http://www.openoffice.org
OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute. To help build the community, join us.

Their equivalent of Power Point is Impress: http://www.openoffice.org/product/impress.html

2. I would suggest checking out Impress first (free) before buying Powerpoint
It reads and writes to the powerpoint format.

...the vast majority of powerpoint presentations really don't require the fancy-schmancy stuff

If you need it NOW, I'm thinking you really don't need the extras (visual basic for applications programming).

But considering the cost, check out OpenOffice's Impress first to see if you can get by with it. I think the odds are in your favor for it doing the job.

A MAC client of mine from years ago needed a spreadsheet - ONE SINGLE SPREADSHEET. I just didn't see the jusification to buy Excel for his need.

We got by very nicely with OO's "calc" and were able to tranfer files between my Linux and his Mac.

(again, you can save "calc" files to Excel format...)
