My CD-burner ate my CD-drive; now what?

I was installing the software for an HP CD burner, and it totally crashed my CD drive. My computer no longer recognizes it.

I get this message: Driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39)

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive, but that didn't help.

The CD-drive is Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2512.

I am an idiot with this stuff. Do I need to do something to edit my registry? That scares me...

1. Do you have them jumpered correctly

One drive should be master, the other set as slave. If you have both set the same the system may not recognize one, either or both depending how it feels about it.

2. Check the jumpers

One should be jumpered to be the master and the other the slaves. On CD Readers and CD burners it really does not matter. The HD that is the boot drive has to be a master. You can also use CS (cable select) and the first one on the IDE cable will be the master.
