I want my favorite WIndows 95 program back
Edited on Wed Mar-30-11 09:51 PM by truedelphi
Long story short (Okay, in all reality, Long Story Medium version.)

About three years ago, my beloved Windows 95 crashed out.

Twenty years of stuff on there, and granted the key components of my life were indeed backed up, but still.

So last week a young computer tech fixed the machine for me.

But although he was able to put everything that was on the old hard drive in terms of my docuiments and photos, (the one that crashed) onto a CD, he could only get it up and running onto a new HD (Still WIndows 95) and he only got a very few programs installed.

One of my all time favorites is this Windows 95 program called "Capture Lite."

It was a program that let you capture screen shots off the internet, and also you could manipulate your photos, drawings etc and it was easy to learn. For me it was a thousand times better than InDesign or any other of those programs, (all of which are installed on either our newer MAC or our XP) I like it because in about three hours you knew everything you ever needed to know to do anything that you would need to do.

However, the last time I talked to the young man who had created Capture Lite, he said that when MicroSoft went to Windows XP, that he was locked out of the loop, and could no longer make new programs to market. (I was trying to get Capture lite for XP so the newer machine we benefit from using it on the newer machine.)

So now all I want to do is to be able to install the Capture Lite. I looked at the web, and found that there is apparently a new improved version, but that version will not work on Windows 95.

The old version has been stored on my Windows XP machine, but it will not convert back to the Windows 95, either because of copy protection, or because the Windows XP computer is trying to protect me from this file that it cannot recognize. (Cannot recognize it since it is not compatible with the upgraded version of DOS that came with Windows XP.)

Are there any work arounds?

1. I take it that you've tried the Program Compatibility Wizard ?
I wasn't sure by what you meant >> "but it will not convert back to the Windows 95"

6. Please tell me more about the Program Compatibility Wizard.
I don't think I have ever heard about this.

Here's the deal - the copy I purchased of Capture Lite cannot be found. It came to me either through an email with attachment, or through the mail on a CD. I've moved three times, and doubt I'll ever find the CD, etc.

And although I have the program intact on the XP machine, where it has been stored, when I got o transfer it out of XP and onto a CD, it won't happen. Transfer is very slow, much slower than anything else I have transferred in the last few months. And in the final seconds of transfer, i get messages that the transfer cannot be made.

2. Not sure if this would work for you, but...
I use the built-in Snipping Tool in Win 7 and use the freeware Paint.Net to perform any manipulations.

There are many freeware screen capture programs available for XP and Paint.Net will run on XP.

4. Thanks for the tip. But But But
I have Paint. I have Indesign, I have Adobe Photoshop. But:

This program's (Capture Lite's) redeeming quality is that for someone like me, who only does graphics every three months - it takes about ten minutes to figure out from scratch what to do. With Photoshop and the others, I have re-tutor myself for more than a half hour each time.

3. You say you have an old version 'stored' on the xp machine
Is that the installer? If so, you should be able to copy that and install on the Win95 machine.

You could try this: go to http://www.oldversion.com/ and download a version of Faststone Capture. It may be close to the program you had.

5. I will try the sugggestion of "FastStone" capture.
For whatever reason, despite muiltiple attempts, I cannot move the Capture Lite from the CD I have it on (Taken from the Windows XP which was storing it.)

It just dawned on me maybe the whole CD is damaged and not working right...

8. Have you thought of buying used computer that will let you install Win95 on it?

10. Try running installing Windows 95 as a guest in VirtualBox
VirtualBox is free. If you've got your Windows 95 disks and "Capture Lite" disks, you may be able to do the install. Moreover, if Virtual Box Guest Additions work for a Windows 95 guest, you'll be able to switch to Full Screen Mode and really have something like the experience of running Windows 95 on your XP computer
