Need a scanner that can also do medium format negatives and transparencies - any thoughts?
Edited on Sun Oct-31-10 02:46 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I'd like to keep it under $200 if I can.

I was just looking at the canon 9900f, as it appears it can at least do medium format negatives, though not sure if it can handle transparencies.

but that was a quick look by me, someone who knows nothing of scanners, since I've never owned one and have only used one once or twice in my life.

I have a LOT of medium format transparencies I want to scan, and would rather not pay the $2 or so apiece that the local photo store wants for it. A $200 scanner will quickly pay for itself that way.

The medium format I have is negatives that are 6cm x 6 cm.

Thanks for the help!

1. I miss Dektol
I don't have any useful information for you, sorry to say. But I just want to say that I miss the days of Tri-X and Pan-X and Dektol and stop bath and fixer and red lights and all that jazz. And realizing that processing Ektachrome slides and Cibachrome prints wasn't really that difficult. (Though those Cibachrome chemicals smelled something like sulfur and rotten eggs and ammonia.) I miss that stuff. If you don't mind me asking, what's on all those old negatives and transparencies? Inquiring minds. :)

2. Sometimes I miss hand-processing, and sometimes think it would be fun to have a darkroom.
But mostly, no - lol

The slides and negatives I have are pictures from travels and life in general, including a great many astounding (if I say so myself) landscape shots in Japan and Hawaii and NYC and elsewhere.

I also have thousands of 35mm slides of the same places that would also be nice to get scanned in.

For many years, I only shot slide film (and shot an awful lot of it) because of its better resolution and detail, so I have piles and piles of them.

4. Do you have a digital camera?
This guy gets pretty good results with a slide attachment:

5. You want a scanner with a true 48 bit output for maximum color fidelity scanning negatives/slides..
I have an Epson Perfection 3490 Photo that does an excellent job on 35mm slides/negatives, I use it in the true 48 bit mode and the automatic color adjustments work very well, I rarely have to tweak anything to get great results.

Something like an Epson V600 flatbed should do the job for you in all but the most critical negative/slide scanning applications.
