Anybody ever upgrade cpu in an hp/compaq d530 sff?
How the F! to remove the BFB1012H brushless fan over the 478 socket? It seems to be held in with two silver clips attached to hinged levers. The only thing I find on the web says to push down really hard. Pushing the levers down doesn't make sense, because it tightens the clips. Lifting the levers up, tapping the clips back to the stop, and pushing down hard on the other end might make sense, if I push forward once they're down -- but I'm not exited to do this, because I'll jab a bank of capicitors if I slip

Anybody know?

2. Yeah, I downloaded that two months ago. You're looking at the heatsink
there: it's supposedly underneath the cooling fan, so that diagram couldn't help until I get the fan off -- and of course it may not help even then, since the manufacturing mofos typically don't do what they say they did, so the heatsink may not actually look anything like that

3. Flip the levers so it loosens
Then push down at each end so the clip comes of the hook on the motherboard. What are you going to upgrade to? The best thing to do with an old socket 478 is pull the whole thing and replace motherboard, cpu and memory. Those 478 cpus are getting hard to find and some of the later models were not compatible with the older motherboards.

4. It's a 2.66ghz and I'm going to try to upgrade it to a 3.2
I could find several old chatboard posts by people who said they'd done this and were warning explicitly about which P4s would work and which not. I think I grabbed a second hand 3.2 cpu that meets the specs

I've already added a bit of memory. The case is tight, and some of the wiring might physically press RAM sticks if I added more, so I'm holding off and thinking about that. I'll probably upgrade the harddrive, but there may be compatibility issues there too: there's some double-checking needed

I bought it as a dedicated box for comparing Linux distros: I have a decent collection on hand, most installed in virtualbox now, but I figure I could drop ten favorites onto this thing and check out various aspects like networking

I tell myself I'm really working up my courage for a build by getting in the habit of attending to details and expecting things to go wrong

6. I've stared at that picture dozens of times but maybe I've misunderstood it
I think it shows how to unclip the heatsink, but it's possible the same clips hold the heatsink and fan, so maybe they've just made the fan invisible in the picture

8. Thanks. I don't have time to play with it today. I'll report later
7.16 should apply for my SFF, but I think my fan couldn't possibly be removed as indicated. 6.1.6.2 on 103 is the closest thing in the CMT section but shows no fan

:grr:
