Windows 7 Install
I just installed Windows 7 on my laptop. I chose the option of getting rid of the old OS (Vista) and so far it seems to have gone well. The only little glitch is getting the Desktop (XP OS) and the Laptop with Windows 7 in the same Workgroup, but I can at least access each from the other so I guess it's ok.

I might consider upgrading my XP to Windows 7 when I feel like transferring all my stuff to external and starting over.

Thanks for the help! I think I'm going to like Windows 7.

1. The default workgroup name
in WinXP is MShome

In Win 7 it is Workgroup. Maybe check that both are the same.

I just can't get the Laptop to show up in the Workgroup on the Desktop. Now, for some reason, the desktop isn't showing on the laptop network. it was there before.

3. I have exactly same setup as you
Win 7 on laptop and XP on desktop. I'm fairly new to networking Win7 and had similar problems to you when I first hooked up the laptop but it's all fine now.

I ran the router setup on both computers, then the WinXP network setup wizard on the desktop, making sure I changed the workgroup to 'Workgroup'. After a reboot of both machines the network has been fine.

4. Is there a way to delete workgroup setups on the XP....
I tried a couple of times and now have two with the wrong name.

I didn't setup the router on the laptop as Windows 7 found it with no problem.

Thanks for your help.

5. I don't think it matters if unused workgroup names

appear in My Network Places in XP.

Try right clicking My Computer, Properties and the Computer Name tab. You see Full Computer name, Workgoup name and a button to change. Make sure that the correct workgroup is selected or entered in this window.

(on edit) Make sure you reboot after change.

6. Ok, I found the desktop from the laptop.
You have to click it in a dropdown window on Network page. Duh. It's going to take awhile to learn on the bells and whistles on Windows 7. I like the speed of it and might consider changing the desktop to Windows 7 as well.

I guess I have to pay for another whole Windows 7 disc, right?

7. I'd imagine so
After having Win7 for a shortish while, I still prefer XP, which I have tweaked to death over the years. I kinda prefer the nuts and bolts approach rather than have the operating system assume too much on my behalf. I'd like to get rid of the Libraries on Win7 but haven't found out how to delete them.

8. You know, you're right.
Why fix what isn't broken? I find XP to be stable and easy to use.
