Help with copying files to a network storage device
Edited on Wed Mar-03-10 03:17 PM by lazarus
I'm using Windows7, and have been transferring all my files over to a new network storage device from Iomega. I transferred all my mp3s with no problem. Now I'm transferring all my videos. It got about halfway through the transfer, and now windows has popped up a box saying:

Are you sure you want to copy this filed without its properties?

The file *filename*.avi has properties that can't be copied to the new location.

Apparently, there are other files like this. What sort of properties is it talking about?

On edit: the way I'm doing this is, I just brought up Explorer and copied and pasted the files. For some reason, the disc that came with the storage device doesn't work, so I had to download the drivers/software from Iomega's website, and didn't get the backup software.

4. not copy protected
I burned these files to disc with no problems. And I just copied them into another directory, no problems.

2. Dunno. What do you see if you open the Properties pop-up box for these files?
There may, for example, be information about Who created the file and When; you may not care about losing that. If some compression has been applied, that information may also be attached to the file; you probably would care about losing that. Similarly, check if any of the files are archived

5. they're not archived
I'm trying to figure out what I'm seeing; I'm relatively new to Windows post-XP.

It's an avi file. 488 mb. It's not archived or hidden. There's very minimal data on the details tab, just creation date, file size, and audio and video specs.

I don't really care about losing the who/when stuff. I went ahead and told it to copy the first file. It copied just fine, but the copy is marked as archived.

3. A similar problem with Vista seems to be non ntfs file system on external device.
If you can try reformatting your external as ntfs. Fat32 system has file size limits of I believe 2GB and volume size of 32GB. Also you may need admin level and ownership of original files.

6. it's a one terabyte drive
How do I tell if it's ntfs or fat32? It doesn't show up as a hard drive, the internal folders simply show up as being part of the computer when I open Explorer.

7. Check the manual. I think Iomega ships its drives pre-formatted FAT32:
if the manual says it shipped FAT32 and you haven't reformatted, then that's what you got

8. okay
first, thanks for the help, to everybody.

I checked the manual online. This is all I could find about the formatting:

"The Home Media Drive shares files using the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol and stores its files on XFS (built-in), FAT32 (external), and NTFS (external) hard drives. You will need to use characters supported by these filesystems to successfully share your files. Any filename supported by a Windows PC should work with most platforms."

So that doesn't help. I'm going to call them tomorrow. I'm still pissed that the software disc didn't work, so they owe me a new one of those, anyway.

I actually used to know what I was doing on a computer. Lately, I feel like a n00b.

9. Had the same problem with Vista and Windows 7 and fixed it.

when copying files to an external disk (and yes, the external disk was also formatted NTFS) and solved it by making copies with a free utility named Teracopy. Now I no longer get those messages or the Green Line of Death when making copies to the external disk and I know exactly what is happening with each file (I have the paid pro version of teracopy).

10. Yes! Another vote for Teracopy
I've been using it for a while, usually to ensure the integrity of files copied via VPN from and to (remote) work computer. I'm still using the free copy but consider the program so good that I would pay for the pro version. What are the differences?

*To the OP, I also have NAS but not Iomega, so can't really help there but wonder if you are using some kind of proprietary software that came with the device. Have you tried mapping the network drive so it just shows up as an icon, like any other drive?

11. I'm using their software
I'm going to map it as soon as I remember the password into it or get off my lazy ass and walk over there and hit the reset button.
