1. Sam, that unfortunate typo in your subject
made me laugh.

I'd recommend VLC player. Not only does it play most media files, it can open and play bought (with menus) DVDs.

For backing up DVDs - DVDShrink. You can convert the DVD into an ISO file ready to burn to another DVD. www.dvdshrink.org/

Or you could rip the content off DVDs with WinX Free DVD Ripper, which makes it easy to save to AVI, MPEG etc to store on a hard drive. http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper/

All freeware of course.

2. You can use VLC to rip DVDs too...
...it's a little fiddly to start with, but gives you all sorts of options over output (like optimising the output file for an iPod). There's a how-to here: http://lifehacker.com/397573/master-your-digital-media-with-vlc/

3. Concur with VLC.

I've been using it as my default music and video player for quite some time and it does all I expect of it.
I haven't tried installing it on the new Win7 laptop I bought Sunday but I'll find out how it works soon.

 :hi:
