DVD Flick help
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 04:08 PM by Duer 157099
After a couple of successful conversions/burns (converting mp4/avi files to DVD format, burn to DVD to play on regular DVD player), I ran into a problem.

Each conversion takes over 3 hours, so if I can salvage this project instead of a complete redo, that'd be great. Plus it'd be good just to understand how these things work, if possible.

Anyway, there are 6 files, each 10 minutes long. The first 4 converted fine and I still have all the intermediate files. BUt the program choked on the 5th file and then quit, leaving all the files but not producing the DVD.

I discovered the problem with the 5th file and have fixed it, so here's now my question:

Can I separately convert the remaining 2 files and then somehow append them all together to create the DVD? What would I need to manually change?

Edit: More information

From the aborted attempt, I have the .m2v and .ac3 files for the first 4 segments.

I did a second session with just the 2 remaining segments, and see I have not only the .m2v and .ac3 files, but in addition the .mpeg file (presumably the merge of the video/audio)

So now I have 2 questions:

How do I "merge" the m2v and ac3 files, and if that works, how do I then create a DVD using all 6 files?

Thanks to anyone who can help me understand this!

Another edit: with yet more info

Looks like what I need for problem #1 is a "muxer" (multiplexer). A quick search landed this one:

http://www.videohelp.com/download/ImagoMPEG-Muxer.zip

(haven't tried it yet though)

What it does is combine the m2v and ac3 files together into the VOB format

... I may solve this before anyone shows up here, in which case I'll just post what I find. But if you know anything about this, please chime in!

Or enough to get by anyway. What a complex topic, ugh.

One of the best resources I stumbled upon was:

http://www.gromkov.com/faq.html

Lots of good (SIMPLE) explanations and links to freeware tools. Very helpful.

So I used the ImagoMPEG-Muxer to "reconnect" the m2v and ac3 files into mpeg files (other option avail as output was VOB)

I could have made them VOB but I wasn't sure how to create the "info" files (eg, VIDEO_TS.IFO), although I since read how to do this (use the freeware program "Ifo Edit" see: http://www.gromkov.com/faq/faq2004-0066.html ) but anyway, now that I had all the segments as mpegs, I just ran them all through the DVD Flick again to create the DVD (I know, waste of time, but it was much less time than beginning from scratch since they had already been transcoded).

But that IFO Edit program sounds like it will be very useful - I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like if you have file segments available as VOBs then you can generate the proper .IFO/.BUP files that are needed to play on a DVD player.

editing to add another link I found useful, just so I know where to find it:

http://www.doom9.org/dvd-structure.htm

another edit:

I have this feeling that the mpeg files that resulted from "muxing" the m2v+ac3 files are actually the same as VOB files and that all I really need to do was change their names and then generate the .ifo/.bup files.
