Question re: Windows and Passwords
Disclaimer: I'm a mac guy, but have to use a Windows (XP) system at work. I am tech support, so there's no one to call. Please don't tell me to switch to Linux, or how much windows sucks, there is nothing I can do about it.

Question: why can't I get windows to memorize passwords? Everything that requires a password requires reentering that password every time I start the program. For most things I live with it. Yes, I have tried checking the 'remember password' box) But my ISP now requires me to use a stmpauth mail server, which requires authentication and my password to send and receive email. So I have to enter the password to receive email when Outlook starts up. And then enter the account settings sections, go through several windows and enter my password again under the 'more settings' tab. Surely this is unreasonable, there must be something else going on, right?

Thanks...

1. Cookies?
Some web places require cookies to remember passwords, e.g DU.

Some of the passwords you mention would seem to not be
Windoze things, so it would not be a Windoze issue to get
them remembered.

There is a good deal of futzing around these days with security
issues, and one of the things this leads to is a certain amount
of this sort of annoyance.

Mozilla offers a password manager that will remember these things
for you for various web sites if you ask it to, e.g. for the mail
issue. It also has a cookie manager that you can use to decide
which sites got to use cookies.

I don't have access to XP to play with, so can't offer
other help.

2. If you're talking about Outlook
Go to Tools, e-Mail Accounts. Choose View or Change e-mail accounts and hit next. Highlight your POP/SMTP connections (probably your ISP address) and choose Change. Under logon information, make sure your user name and password are entered and make sure the Remember password box is checked. Click on More Settings and go to the tab Outgoing Server. Make sure the radio button is activated for Use same settings as my incoming server.
