Help! Re: Western Digital External Hard Drive
Okay, so I bought a Western Digital Essentials 640 GB Extrenal Hard Drive about a week ago - mainly to babysit some files and programs in anticipation of getting a new/used computer.

Old computer is a PC running XP.
New computer will be a Power Mac G5.

Anyway, I plug in the HD and transfer a bunch of things to it, it works fine (with the exception that it seemed to hibernate whenever the PC did, and would take a while to wake back up) Now, all of a sudden, my computer won't recognize it. It shows up under Device Manager as an unkown USB device and wants me to re-install drivers...which I've tried and doesn't work. I've googled the problem and find lots about re-assiging it a letter under disk management, but it doesn't show up there. Other USB devices (i.e. memory sticks) show up immediately.

I was transferring and accessing documents to the external HD literally less than 24 hours ago.

I am waiting on a power cord for the Mac, so I can't plug it in there and see if it works.

The hard drive DIDN'T read on my XP-running laptop either, but the laptop is crap and I didn't think much of it. But maybe if there's a fix it would work on the laptop too...?

Anyone have any ideas?

1. check event vuewer and see if there is an error
you can also look under services and see if there is something marked "automatic" that shows stopped, and if so, try to start it.
