...thing, and I can't figure out how to get it off her computer. This is the one that wants you to pay them - i.e. blackmail - for infecting your computer. Do I need a program, or can I do it manually? Thanks for any and all advice.

2. Here are manual removal instructions
http://www.xp-vista.com/spyware-removal/av2009-av2009exe-removal-instructions

From reading the blog comments, it seems that the Spyhunter program that they recommend to remove it is not free. Up to you if you think it is worth paying for.

Good luck.

...I've tried the manual methods from your links, and so far, it seems to be holding up. The infection hasn't popped up in some time. Thanks so much...

5. Listen to whistler.
A co-worker at work on his work laptop got infected with this malware yesterday. I download mbam (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) and ran it on his computer. I also used Crap Cleaner to clean up his temp files. He is working fine now. We had an infection on the network. It's kind of hard to imagine an infection could hit a company as big as the one I worked for through the network but it did. They updated their anti-virus patterns but I can't believe what people will click on even those I think are savy. Mbam is one of the best cleanup utilities I've used.
