Anyone here used Computrace?

It allows you to keep track of laptop computers. I'm working on a laptop refresh project and a laptop we shipped to one of the employees at a hotel disappeared after it was delivered by UPS. It was recovered less than 24 hours later because of the software.

1. Hmm, I have to wonder just how effective this would be.

I mean, anyone who knows what they're doing is just going to wipe and re-image a system - totally defeating this software solution. Only if the person who stole it connects it to the Internet first and then tries to hack their way in by guessing passwords is this going to reliably help.

2. There's a hardware piece to it also

although I don't know the details. Seeing that it was taken from a hotel, I think the odds are good that the person was pretty naive.
