mac.HELP...uploading html files to "web.me.com"
I created a simple website using nestled tables and can't get the links to work the way they did in FrontPage.

iWeb sucks, and I can't figure out the heirarchy of my .mac account.

I need to change some of the html for the links to work but am lost.

If anyone can help I'd be most obliged.

Here is the site, the letter links should open to a new page within each of the ten windows, but still refer to the wrong files.

1. It looks like you're using absolute links to the files on your desktop
You only need to specify relative links.

Here's what you've got for your links:
<a href="file:///Users/barryscott/Desktop/Enigma2/2H.htm">
<font size="6">H</font>
</a>

What you want is this:

<a href="2H.htm">
<font size="6">H</font>
</a>

2. Well, there's yer problem ...

Was just gonna post the same thing.

Apparently some editors inexplicably do this by default.

4. thanks, ok, so I just used text edit to modify the file..
By opening the iDisk folder, finding that file, changing the html, then update....

..but "view source" still shows the old html.

Any suggestions on making sure the changes stick?

5. I'm not sure I'm much help ...

I built my first website with notepad, coding the html "by hand." I'm not that much into masochism anymore, so I use Kompozer. It's a WYSIWYG editor that also allows you to modify the source, which I find I need to do often to get the specific results I want.

I'm not sure how the content management system you're using does things. My advice would simply be to open the pages in Kompozer, make sure all the links are relative rather than absolute, then use an FTP client to upload the pages to the server. But, I don't know if that would help you.

9. I'll try KompoZer, thanks!
I'm spoiled by FrontPage and it's built-in uploading app.

Apple is usually awesome, but sometimes it's a pain, like now.

12. My problem was with folder heirarchy and general confusion...
http://web.me.com/barry_scott/Enigma2/EnigmaWebC.html

None of the ftp apps worked because mac.com seems to want you to use iWeb or homepage.mac (and I didn't know what to use as the host ftp address).

Another problem was that iWeb and homepage.mac.com don't like frames, and I've got frames within frames for this simple game.

Also, I'm new to iDisk and found that several folders had been created, one called Enigma2 at top level, and another Enigma2 folder within the Web/Sites/ folder, and it was these files that needed to be changed.

Of course the URL for the final site suggests that the top level folder is the working one, not the buried within two other folders one.

Once I figured out where the files were, I just used text edit to rewrite the html for the 10 files that needed changes, then swapped them for the actual target files.

It only took a couple days total (sigh).

Thanks for your help, I was not alone in my grief!

3. Thanks, 3 more questions:
I've been trying to modify the links in SeaMonkey Composer, but not sure that it's uploading properly.
Can you recommend a good text editor?

I assume the files are in my idisk in the folder Enigma2, but not sure because all the same files are also in the folder called "Sites".
Maybe this is due to my several attempts to upload. Any thoughts?

Do you know of a way to do all this from scratch by importing and editing my files in iWeb, or am I stuck with their dog gone templates?

Thanks so much!

6. I can't help you there

I use Cream for VIM for a programmer's editor. I never really got the hang of those new-fangled development environments that all the kids have been talking about (for the past twenty years).

I hear Amaya has come a long ways, but I haven't used the latest. It will let your browse your pages on your site and edit them at the same time. It's also free and has versions for Windows and Mac and installation packages for various flavors of Linux.

Amaya lets users both browse and author Web pages

Using Amaya you can create Web pages and upload them onto a server. Authors can create a document from scratch, they can browse the web and find the information they need, copy and paste it to their pages, and create links to other Web sites. All this is done in a straightforward and simple manner, and actions are performed in a single consistent environment. Editing and browsing functions are integrated seamlessly in a single tool.

There's also KompoZer, which is the descendant of NVu. Again, I can't vouch for it but as with Amaya it is free and has versions for Windows, Mac and Linux.
KompoZer is a complete web authoring system that combines web file management and easy-to-use WYSIWYG web page editing.

KompoZer is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding.

On edit: I see RoyGBiv has already mentioned KompoZer.

7. According to Wikipedia, iWeb is indeed template based
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 04:18 PM by salvorhardin
So it looks like you can't easily edit the files.

iWeb is a WYSIWYG template-based website creation tool made by Apple Inc. and included with its Macintosh computers. ...

iWeb is currently in its second version, and has a limited feature set and some unresolved bugs. Some limitations include:

* Creates different CSS files for each page instead of one central file to save disk space
* Templates dictate the HTML with little control over the final output (eg. difficult to add Google Analytics tracking code).

On edit: I don't see why you can't just use KompoZer to edit the files on your hard drive and then simply mount your iDisk and copy the files into your Sites folder. Cut out iWeb entirely.
