"My Yahoo" Firfeox 3 Problem
Edited on Sat Aug-02-08 08:41 AM by Hokie
Yahoo recently FORCED me to use the "new and improved" My Yahoo page. This page and DU are my Home tabs. I have been resisting the change for 2 years. the old layout was better IMO. Now half of the buttons will not work and the mail notifier doesn't work either. It appears to be a Java script issue. I wish Yahoo would have figured out that there might be one or two of us out there who do not use IE. :grr:

1. An IE emulator
With IE Tab you can make Firefox display certain pages in IE mode.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

I'm surprised their pages don't work in Firefox, but this would be a relatively quick and painless fix to the problem.

6. Thanks for the tip
I have something similar to that extension that allows me to view pages in IE by right clicking. I had seen this extension before and will check it out. My problem turned out to be Ad Block (see below).

2. Do you have any extensions?

E.g. Noscript? Do you have any limitations on allowing javascript?

It all works for me, but I had to allow javascript from yimg.com to get the mail notifier and a few other functions/links to work properly.

3. It was Adblock Plus
I am not running Noscript. After reading your post I started poking around. Java was enabled. I disabled Adblock Plus and voila! the drop down menus started working. Thanks.

Javascript can be affected by a lot of things, even things like firewalls in some cases.

Glad you got it sorted out.

OnEdit: I'm not a big fan of AdBlock for this reason. It's named inappropriately basically. It doesn't block "ads." It blocks the mechanisms by which many ads are delivered. Of course, this also blocks the mechanisms by which a lot of the so-called Web 2.0 (I really hate that title) stuff is being delivered, including, as you discovered, the functionality of websites like Yahoo.

I use NoScript and change settings on the fly as needed, adding things like DU or Yahoo to my whitelist, temporarily allowing other things to see what it is at the time I view it, or blocking stuff altogether. I see very few ads unless they are on websites where I've allowed all the javascript that might deliver them to me, which isn't many. I let DU run javascript, for example, but I don't see the ads placed here even though I don't have them turned off in my profile. NoScript blocks them.

This is just a personal preference comment, not a suggestion that you change anything.

5. NoScript, etc.
Thanks for the comments. I get complacent with something like Ad Block and assume that it is always working exactly like I think it should work. I should know better. It does work 99% of the time. I have been meaning to check out NoScript. I will take a look.

7. Specifically, it was Fileset G
I removed the Fileset G filter for ADP and installed Rick's Easy List filter. It works with ADP enabled on My Yahoo. This is a good lesson. I have seen other pages with dead buttons. I will know now to try disabling ADP first when pages do not seen to operate as expected. I love this group!
