sharing my victory over a dell computer and its goofy bios
First let me explain. I am a professional. I repair computers for a living.

But this Dell Dimension 8100 drove me batty.

Did a fresh XP install on a new hard drive. This 1.25 pentium 4 with 384 meg of memory ran like a dog. It took an entire day to install XP. It was literally like the clock was running at about a tenth of its proper speed.

Well what do you know. It was!!!

Dell has a little bios setting for clock speed. compatible or normal. Damn thing was set to compatible and it was the problem. Set it to normal and now it runs fine.

Now if I can just remember this the next time it happens. :-)

I'm glad its fixed. My tech nightmare for the last week managed to "fix itself" this morning. Apparently the computer gods were smiling on me today. It's a nice feeling :)
