Help needed transferring computer file to different PC
The IE 'Favorites' file on my desktop PC is great - organized with subfolders and flush with a zillion links I use weekly. I want to take this favorites file and use it to replace the favorites file on my laptop, so I can have access to my research on the road.

I burned my desktop favs file onto a CD, and transferred it onto the Desktop of my laptop. The links all work from there as file items I double-click, but I don't know how to properly replace the current favs folder on my laptop with the good one I copied to the laptop desktop.

Any ideas? I tried copy/paste and lift/drop, no soap.

1. In the File menu there's an Import/Export function.

2. File menu under Explorer, IE, or somewhere else?
After I find this item, is its use self-explanatory?

Do I have to delete the current Favorites folder so I can replace it with the new one?

Many thanks.

3. The function opens a wizard
It should just add to the list you're importing to. At least it does in my Mozilla/Seamonkey browser, shouldn't be any different in IE

4. Will, it should add the bookmarks to your regular bookmarks
on your laptop. Its easy. Just go file, import and export, click next. Highlight import favorites and click next. You will need to navigate to wherever you have the bookmarks saved. If its on your desktop then you will need to navigate to your desktop and select the file. Click finish and you're done!

5. The Favorites file is generally located in
c:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Favorites.

If you copy just the links (not the Favorites folder itself) into that folder, they will appear on the laptop.

But Will you may want to look into these software products - they go one step better and synchronize your Favorites automatically, so they'll always be the same no matter which computer (or browser) you're using.

Oh and if you ever make the move to Mozilla Firefox, there are FREE add-ons that will sync your bookmarks between computers for that.

6. Funny that you bring up doing this with FireFox...

Since I use mutable computers and they are all internet friendly, I just did install F.F. "Bookmark Sync and Sort" and I FTP my favorites to my Web site.
It is nice to have "that" link on all my computers.

7. Foxmarks
http://www.foxmarks.com/

This is a great Add-in for Firefox. It will automatically sync up your bookmarks on multiple computers. If you add or delete a bookmark it performs the same change next time you open Firefox on the other computers.
