media player classic
I'm on a new install of xp home and I'm wanting to use media player classic as I think it will play dvd's, is this so and is there anything I need to do to make sure I get a good install. Is it as simple as downloading and installing? TIA
I should already know this but for some reason I'm a little apprehensive about doing it.
I seem to be able to do fine without playing quicktime or real player files so I really don't need the player to play either. Any and all guidance is greatly appreciated. ;-)

1. K-Lite codec pac ...

It's not just the player that allows you to play DVDs. You need a decryption mechanism.

If memory serves, K-Lite Codec Pac includes a DVD decryption codec and Media Player Classic. Get the complete version, and when you install, just leave all the defaults checked, but skim through the list to make sure the bit that allows you to view DVDs is ticked.

2. I install Media Player Classic as part of the basic setup
on any computer I build or rebuild. Plays DVD's just fine.

4. Is the digital audio playback enabled?
Go to Control Panel; System, Hardware, Device Manager, DVD-CD ROM Drives and check properties. If it isn't, enable it. If it is and you're not getting sound, then double-click the speaker icon to show your sound panel and see if any of the inputs are muted.

7. MP Classic simply ain't necessary.
Although it's undocumented and generally unknown, Media Player automatically includes a copy of Media Player v2 in its install directory. This is basically the same thing as Player Classic.

Its exact location is C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe

Simply create a shortcut to this file and it's ready to go.
