Weird bug/issue

I've asked the IT people here, and none of them have ever heard of this. Any ideas?

Platform is Microsoft Windows XP. Usinf Microsoft Office 2003 and Outlook 2003 for email. When I am in Excel (mostly) or Word (a few times) and I go to Outlook - already open - Excel will shut down with no warning. The tab in the bottm tray just disappears, and I have to restart the program again. The autoRecover feature will restore the file, but if it hasn't saved by the time this happens, I lose data. there's not anything I can trace this to other than going to Outlook either; sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't, and I've never seen any connection to anything I do in Outlook.

Has anyone heard of this? If not, are there any resourcesI could go to for help with this?

1. If this were happening to me, the first thing I might think about is RAM

I have no idea if it's a specific software bug, but the first thing that I would rule out is the RAM. I'd run one of those free RAM-testing programs -- here's one from MS:

Again, I really don't know if this is the problem, but it wouldn't hurt to rule it out. Good luck!
