Unless you're using some really buggy software, that happening would suggest to me some other sort of problem.
In any case, you know XP has the same kind of search feature 95 has, don't you? START > Search Or is that what's crashing? As I said, buggy software. :-)
If you want something slicker, I flatly refuse to recommend any commercial hard drive search client. I only know of one; it costs $100 and works no better than the free counterparts and is geared more toward large companies. It has features you would *never* use.
Try
Google Desktop or
Copernic. (I don't use either, FWIW, because I use a simple CLI command on my Linux system or Beagle when I feel like it, but I have used them.)
Free software, particularly software covered under the GPL or some variant, is no more likely to come bundled with malware than commercial software. Now, you do have to be careful of those "free downloads." That should often be taken literally. No one will charge you to download the package, but after that, all bets are off. You may not have to pay anything to use the software, but it'll have some sort of malware or other annoyance bundled in its installer.
