I have Ubuntu 7.1
is a dual boot system the way to go or would it be better if I just went cold windows turkey and take it from there. As it is now it seems to be slower than xp and I guess my question is will that be the case 'cause I'm not too happy with that.

pretty much all our computer is used for is the internet so what would be the best version of linux for us. Any and all help is greatly appreciated

1. I have Ubuntu and XP
dual booting on the same machine. I like linux more than windows, but there are just some things I can't do in linux yet. For surfing and email though it can't be beat. I don't know why it would be slower for you. It seems much faster on line to me.

2. If you are running off the CD it will be slower.
Once it is installed, it shouldn't be slower.

Dual boot or not? It depends what you use the computer for, and how big the hard drive is.

I use Linux exclusively, but then again that's pretty natural to me because I've been on board since BSD UNIX was first released and there's nothing I want to use Microsoft or Apple for.

My kids on the other hand use iTunes and want to play games and such that require Microsoft.

3. Depends ...

As mentioned already, whether you dual boot or not often boils down to how you use the computer and possibly more importantly, how you might use it in the future.

I personally do 99% of my computing at home on a Linux machine, and it's been that way since maybe a month after I converted. I just found that for most of what I do, I don't need Windows and in fact can do a lot of things more efficiently with Linux. However, I do occasionally like to lose myself in a commercial game. And, as I started to do side-work on other people's computers, I found a Windows installation, not essential, but handy.

If you're like the majority of computer users who do web, e-mail, and the like, a dual boot system is overkill unless you have the extra hard drive space and already have the license for Windows. If you *do* already have the license and the space, setting up a dual boot system, in the end, just gives you more options.
