Source Mage GNU/Linux on my wifes Gateway Celeron 400 with no problems.

Edit: Also the AFROS Live CD (which uses Knoppix to boot an Atari Emulator)

3. Not that it is all that old, it is just a weird one...
one of those oh-shit-iMacs-are-selling-like-crazy-so-lets-try-the-same-thing-with PC hardware

I think it is called a Profile.

One piece 14in LCD with CD, PCMCIA slots, FDD, full size HD (what the fuck were they thinking?) and USB plugs.

The price was right... right out of the dumpster.

5. It works great... only problem I am having now is
the sound card is not working.

It appears to be an integrated sound/video/hd controller of some kind made by Intel.

I am actively investigating.

8. Try System Settings -> Sound Card Autodetection from the panel menu
I believe it is either under "Applications" or "Actions" in the top panel.

Now I remember mine didn't work either at installation-timne autodetect but worked later when I did the autodetect from the menu. And it's similar:

Got the same thing on install.

From google I got a tip to run something under KDE, tried that, also no help.

10. Can you see if it works under Windows?
So we can determine whether it's incompatibility or a hosed soundcard?

In either case, does that machine accept a PCI card? If so, you could buy a soundcard (I suggest a SBLive from Creative) and disable the onboard one in the BIOS setup.

Oh how I love to challange myself.

11. Um, I hesitate to ask, but is this under ALSA? ALSAs mixers
are muted by default. I know you have probably already adjusted the mixer settings, but I bring it up because it is such a common problem.

12. With that, try running "alsamixer" as non-root.

14. No, I do not have alsa installed that I can see
should I grab it?

and I have read about people leaving the mixer muted... no, this is something else.

Still no solution.

21. If you're with FC3 you do have it. It's the default sound system.
Maybe you could download and burn the most recent Knoppix? The version I sent you is rather old.

why.
Mondo bizzaro.

I was clicking around on things, but not on sound settings when it started making noises on mouse clicks.
