Favorite Ice Cream Recipes?
Making homemade ice cream over the 4th. Anyone have a great recipe? We usually go with vanilla, it seems to make everyone happy.

1. Green tea ice cream!
Not too sweet, and very, very refreshing. To make it correctly requires using macha (green tea powder, the kind traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony), but it's worth a try if you can find it.

2. Why not offer mixins?
That way you can stick with the tried and true, just offer things like M&Ms, crushed Heath bars, crushed Oreos, and mabye some finely chopped cherries or strawberries and let folks mix their own.

My guess is that there won't be leftovers.

4. I think vanilla
Elderly father doesn't like change, so I better stick with vanilla. Providing things to mix in is a good idea. I might try that.

5. Here's a rich vanilla ice cream.
Very standard recipe for Creme anglaise. Note the warning!

Vanilla Ice Cream
2 cups heavy cream
2 cups milk
¾ cup plus 2 tbs sugar
1 vanilla bean, split
10 large egg yolks

Combine cream, milk & 7 tbs sugar in a large nonreactive saucepan. Scrape seeds from bean & add along w/pod. Bring to a simmer, stir to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat, cover & let sit for 30 minutes.

Reheat until warm. While cream mixture is reheating, whisk yolks w/remaining 7 tbs sugar in a medium bowl until yolks are thick & lighter in color. Pour about 1/3 of hot cream mixture into yolks. Pour that back into the saucepan & cook over low heat until custard is thick & coats the back of the spoon, 10 to 15 minutes. WARNING. Make sure the yolks get hot enough to kill any bacteria.

Pour custard into a bowl set over ice & cool, stirring occasionally.

Strain & refrigerate overnight.

The next day churn.

makes about a quart

6. How about one with cream, sugar, and Bailey's Irish Cream?
Or you can use a cheaper brand rather than your best Bailey's or Bushmill's .

7. Mmmmm
That sounds like a good one to make for a family gathering without children around. I just finished making a very simple vanilla ice cream, and it turned out great. Top it with some strawberries and it's like a taste of heaven.
