We got some at Costco yesterday. The label says the "snacking sweet." They are! If you see these, buy them. They're amazing. We all know tomatoes are a fruit.

These prove it.

Wow.

The packaging at Costco is different. As normal for them, it is a much larger quantity, maybe three or four times bigger than this and just a plain old clam shell.

1. I will look for those.
I have a pack like that of red tomatoes, but not particulary sweet. Where are the zimas grown?

3. Thanks for the heads up. I'll look for them. Love a seriously sweet tomato for out-of-hand snack.
(aside) Label says Product of Canada I believe... :hi:

4. Yes, that picture says Canada. The container we got says Mexico.
The grower is Mastronardi, based in Ontario. They sell a lot under the Sunset brand, like their Campari tomatoes.

5. They are likely a Japanese hybrid, similar to Sungold but in a grape shape
and more crack resistant (Sungold is the very best, but could never stand shipping).

Most tomato breeding seems to go on in Japan - then the commercial greenhouse producers get the seed and grow out the fruit.

I just can't eat a tomato that I don't grow - so we are happy as can be June through September...then just go without the rest of the time!

6. Sungold's are great. Had a fair crop this year (weird summer on the Pac Coast).

7. Sungold is still my "gold standard" in the category.
For a sweet, fruity cherry tomato, I still haven't found any other varieties that are superior. There is a slightly larger version called Sun Sugar that is the same flavor, just a little bigger fruit, that is its equal.

8. I've tried them all - Golden Gem, Sun Sugar, etc are all "improvements"
on Sungold (so they say), but I've found that what you get is a bit less tendency to crack, a very similar flavor, and much more expensive seed.

I've also tried "dehybridizing" Sungold (as have many others) - you never quite get the unique Sungold flavor in the offspring, though some are close (a fellow in Germany has worked on this and the result is Sungold Select II - quite good, and the advantage of being able to save seeds from it and get the same thing the following year).

But yes, Sungold has no equal, really, in quality.
