1. A while ago I made a starter from rye flour and water
That's it! worked great once I built it up.

1/2 cup rye flour
3/4 cup water

Here's the archived thread on the starter I started - hope it's of use to you!

4. I loved the one I made out of red grapes, flour and water
It had a truly amazing flavor. Unfortunately, what it didn't do very efficiently was make bread rise. I had to supplement it with bread yeast. The flavor was outstanding, though.

Housewolf is the sourdough bread maven on this board. If she doesn't check in soon, give her an email.

5. Sourdough
Hi Shanti,

Most of what I know about sourdough is contained on this page

http://www.angelfire.com/ab/bethsbread/sdMenu.html

It's from a bread forum that I set up a number of years ago which is now defunct, but the sourdough info is still good and, I hope, still helpful.

May I suggest that you read that over and then come back and post any specific questions that you have? Sourdough is a broad subject, so I kinda don't know where to start to answer your questions. I'm crazy about sourdough though, and I'd love to help with whatever questions/needs you may have.

My first suggestion - find your inner experimentor, a lot of mastering sourdough is about trail and error!

Yum, sourdough! Congrats on your interest and good luck on your sourdough journey.

Beth

7. I don't know that you'll like my tip
but the absolute best starter I ever created was when my daughter had bronchitis. We had "bronchitis bread" for months til I got tired of feeding the starter and killed it off.
