MANY years ago, I had a recipe for what was specifically called "Tomato l'Orange Soup".
.
.
.
I lost that recipe and it was probably the BEST soup I've ever made.
.
.
I've found plenty of "Tomato/Orange Soup" and "Tomato & Orange Soup recipes,
but none of them look to be as tasty as this was.
.
.
It was very simple and started from scratch -- blanching and peeling and
seeding the tomatoes. There was chicken broth, onions, frozen OJ concentrate,
and cream. I don't remember any spices -- though that could be bad memory.
.
.
Does anyone have it? Has anyone seen it?
.
.
I've googled over the years to no avail. I originally got it from a cooking
magazine in the 80's.
.
.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
.
.
Thanks.

2. That first one is the CLOSEST, but...
.
.
... these are much the same as I've googled for in the past.
.
There's several key factors in the exact recipe that I've been looking for:
.
1. the word "l'orange"
2. the blanching, peeling and seeding of the FRESH tomatoes
3. blending all but the cream at the end (sorry, failed to mention that in OP)
.
But that first one is worth a try.
.
Thank you.
.
Anyone else?

4. This is the closest I could find
http://pccuisine.com/tomato-basil-soup-recipe.html

Ingredients:
1 lg. onion
2 carrots
2-4 bay leaves
1/2 lemon
16 oz. can whole tomatoes (or 2 c. fresh, skins off)
6 oz. can tomato paste
1/4 c. olive oil
1/4 c. cream (optional)
2 tsp. salt
2 TBS. frozen orange juice concentrate
2 TBS. fresh basil (or sub 1 tsp. dried)
Optional: Pesto, thinned w/olive oil (instead of basil)
Sour cream, creme fraiche, or yogurt for garnish (optional)

And it mentions the fresh tomato method too in the prep...looks a little more complicated than what you mentioned...and has basil...which could have been omitted from the recipe you had?

5. Here are a couple more you could take a look at
I don't know the specific recipe you're looking for, either of these looks close. Do you remember at all what magazine printed the recipe?

6. BINGO!!!!! I do believe that FIRST one is it!!!
.
I remember the baking soda... and vaguely the thyme (I was pretty sure there was ONE spice
involved, but I was a college student at the time and undoubtedly cut the thyme as way too
cost-prohibitive for the amount of cooking I would actually use it for,
.
.
The only thing missing is running it through a blender before adding the cream.
.
.
.
.
.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I've spent years looking and wondering, not
to mention an ENTIRE long weekend poring through my sister's EXTENSIVE collection of cooking
magazines (I'm convinced that's where I first found it).
.
.
I highly recommend it to everyone. That soup (and vichyssoise) were probably the two
tastiest things I used to make. OK, and Chicken in Wine and Mustard Sauce.
.
.
.
Thanks again.

8. I'm going to try it too
It does indeed sound delicious!

I wondered about the baking soda - all I could think was that it helps neutralize some of the acid from the tomatoes, but it seemed like such a small amount and I thought perhahps it was a recent addition to an older recipe.

Good luck, I'm glad to have found something that gives you some hope that you've found your long-lost recipe. I hope it turns out wonderfully for you.
