This weekend in the kitchen.
Looking to Smitten Kitchen today for some ideas. Decided on these two for Bill's lunch:

Big Crumb Coffee Cake
http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/02/big-crumb-coffee-cake/ made with apples and cranberries instead of rhubarb.

Brown Butter Brown Sugar Shorties
http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/12/brown-butter-brown-sugar-shorties/

Going to do a Sunday gravy tomorrow so I can have something really good for a friend who is having outpatient surgery on Monday.

What's cooking in your kitchen this weekend? :D

1. They both look amazing! I'm drooling.
I wonder if you could do spice cookies flavors in a brown sugar shortbread? Hmmm....

No idea what I'm doing foodwise this weekend yet. Other than roasting some sweet potato. I've been craving them since yesterday :)

7. I was thinking about that, too.
But for the first time, I'm going to make them as is.

Glad you got your taters finally. I bought some yesterday, too. I wanted to make a quiche last night with those on the side but I forgot the feta and cheddar cheeses (the grocery was a madhouse!) so we just went out for burgers at a little mom and pop place nearby instead. Will make the quiche later in the week when we're tired of pasta.

14. Hmmmm.....i've never tried them with cheese.
Quiche might be fun to try!

Giada does a Butternut Squash Lasagna that I was thinking of trying with sweet potatoes. Similar idea...

15. Well, the cheeses
were for the quiche, but there is nothing like a baked whole sweet potato with crumbled bleu cheese on it. Absolutely delicious! However, feta would work for those who don't like bleu (heathens! LOL I keed.)

9. The both sound wonderful.
I love biscotti but never bother since Bill can't eat them (dental issues.) Too much trouble for me who shouldn't eat them. LOL

10. Aaargh!
I just browned my butter and poured it in a bowl. Letting it sit on the counter to cool before refrigerating and the bowl cracked clean around the diameter into two clean pieces.

Not so upset about losing the butter but the bowl had belonged to my dear departed Gran. It was one of my favorites. White milk glass with red vertical stripes. Very old. :(

11. I made 5 pints of pickled cauliflower. It had diced red bell pepper and
is seasoned with fennel seeds, cumin seeds, and coriander seeds. It called for white wine vinegar, which I didn't have, so I substituted 50% cider vinegar/50% distilled white vinegar.

Gotta wait 3 weeks to eat it. Sigh.

19. I figured while I was at it I might as well pick up a coupla bags of
jalapenos at 99c Store, so I did.

Well, after I added the carrots and onions and got it all packed in jars, I had TEN PINTS AND TWO HALF-PINTS of pickled jalapenos with carrots and onions, lol. Good thing I like them.......

16. Cooking a turkey right now...
we just didn't get our fill of leftovers this year (maybe we all ate too much on T Day!) so I'm cooking another, smaller one. Used butter and herbs under the skin and I'll whip up some mashed potatoes in a bit. I have some lima beans cooking as a side.

Thanks for the recipes!

18. good news here
We are getting a brand new stove on Tuesday. The bottom element in the oven hasn't worked since summer. I worked around it until now, but the baking itch is just toooooooooo strong to bear.

I am really really looking forward to doing a lot of baking, although we have the problem of not enough mouths to eat the products! There's a firehouse down the street; perhaps they would like a goodie tray periodically.

First thing into the oven will be a triple batch of chex party mix to send to the college freshman. He just finished finals.

I need to order some black walnuts. Got recipes to try.

Supper tonight is pork chops and spaghetti, Mama Leone's restaurant recipe that has been a family favorite for decades.

21. Well, my shortie dough fell apart.
Totally fell apart when I tried to cut them. I did everything to the letter, too. Bill thinks it's just entirely too dry in here with the cold and the heater running. :(

I'm letting the crumbled dough warm up a little to see if there is any way I can put it back together.

I am going to try these again (not tonight, tho) because they look so wonderful.

and get it to mold back together for the most part. Let me tell you these are killer cookies. Incredibly delicious and incredibly rich. :9

I'm sorry about your bowl. It's such a bad feeling when you lose a token from your ancestors and I've done it myself. Shortie dough--well, that happens to the best of us. And, YOU are THE BEST!

25. I spent the weekend in my daughter's kitchen. We did our annual holiday baking spree.
We made 2 kinds of fudge, 4 kinds of cookies and various other treats for friends and family. We keep some and give the rest in gift baskets and ship to family that lives out of state. I brought a good assortment to work with me this morning as my Christmas gift to the guys I work with. They look forward to it every year.

My grandaughter is home on leave from the Navy for the holidays and she chipped in to help so we had 3 generations working in the kitchen this year (with the 4th generation playing in the other room and sampling the treats). My daughter-in-law helped with cleanup and organization and the little boys, aged 2 and 3, got to decorate a few of their own sugar cookies. We had a lot of fun and baked a lot of cookies.

Sunday morning I got volunteered to bake scones for breakfast and served them with some "No-Cook Strawberry Jam" that had been given to my daughter. Delicious!
