This intrigued me for some strange reason
so I now have it in the crockpot. LOL It's gotten quite a few rave reviews, too. I don't have bottled BBQ sauce and plan on making one that's more of a vinegar based sauce.

http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/slow-cooker-pulled-pork/Detail.aspx

Ingredients

* 1 (2 pound) pork tenderloin
* 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle root beer
* 1 (18 ounce) bottle your favorite barbecue sauce
* 8 hamburger buns, split and lightly toasted

Directions

1. Place the pork tenderloin in a slow cooker; pour the root beer over the meat. Cover and cook on low until well cooked and the pork shreds easily, 6 to 7 hours. Note: the actual length of time may vary according to individual slow cooker. Drain well. Stir in barbecue sauce. Serve over hamburger buns.

1. Love the taste of root beer!
The July 2010 "Bon Appetit" magazine has a recipe for Root Beer Baked Beans that looks intriguing to me. Probably a bit redundant with your pork tenderloin spiked with root beer, but I would like to know how your pork loin version tastes. I bet it smells heavenly simmering in the crock pot. :hi:

3. I do, too!
I always have since I was a kid. I don't drink it often now since I don't drink sodas except for the rare occasion. But I had to run a mile over to our little gas station/convenience store/pizza place/car wash/video arcade to get the root beer. They had either A&W Diet Root Beer or IBC so I bought three of the IBCs - two for the pork loin since it was over 4 lbs. and one for Bill and I too split. Tasted very good. :9

It isn't smelling yet but I bet it will smell good soon. :hi:

5. Root beer floats over vanilla ice cream.
It would "kill" me now, but oh, such summertime bliss!

6. I have really never cared
for root beer floats. I like my root beer straight up and unadulterated. LOL

2. I posted this recipe last year. It is my favorite BBQ sauce, and
very vinegary.

Carolina Red BBQ Sauce

1-1/2 cups apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper

Stir all ingredients in small bowl until sugar and salt dissolve (can be prepared 3 days ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)

I put it in old glass bottles and keep some in the refrigerator all the time

I am crazy about root beer. Let us know how this turns out. :hi:

4. Thanx, j!
I will make that one. I don't have any ketchup left but I do have a little tomato paste leftover in the freezer. Think that will work okay, too, don't you think?

Whatcha readin' today?

7. I think the tomato paste will work,
I might add a little more brown sugar since ketchup is sweet.
We have a pork shoulder on the smoker and will make a Carolina sauce to go with it. Unfortunately it won't be ready for at least 5 more hours.

8. I'm going to have to talk my husband
into building a smoker. I love smoked meats. I guess, from the comments I'm reading on my recipe, is that the flavor of the root beer is supposed to mimic somewhat the flavor of the smoking process. I doubt it will be as good.

Enjoy your pork shoulder. :hi:

9. Thank you! It smells great.
If you want a smoker I would look into the sight listed below. We have had ours for ten years and there are lots of helpful hints and recipes.

10. Thank you!
That looks very helpful. We have never been very good at grilling meat outside of hamburgers, hot dogs and brats. I really want to learn how to do it right.

21. I'm so glad you liked it.
It was an interesting read. Have you started the Robert McCammon series yet? I think you will totally love them! The Master of Verona, too.

It's fun that you and I enjoy so many of the same fiction reads, too. :hi:

11. I just tasted the pork
without any sauce on it. It has a slightly sweet taste and it's pretty tender but could definitely use a little more seasoning. We're pretty tired and it's 6:30 here now so we're going to eat it this way tonight but I'm going to shred it and add the sauce japple posted and leave it in the crock pot for a little while longer.

to give tang to KC barbecue pork ribs. I can't wait to try it.

Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 05:40 PM by hippywife
at the allrecipes link, it was just okay. All those folks who said it rivals any BBQ restaurant they've ever been probably just don't get out much.

Good to see you, Beth! :hi:

:wow:

so since I quit my job, i've been preparing lots of fresh low fat food and that takes a lot more time that throwing a chicken breast and BBQ sauce in the crock pot

but was glad to see Skinner's new ideas on cleaning up the mean around here, so i'm checking in most days now, but still not posting much......

hope you and HippyHubby are doing great :hi:

I'm so proud of you. That takes such determination.

I just pretty much restrict myself to the fun and civil areas of DU for the most part. I've thought about leaving but I would miss all my friends here.

All my best to you and Mr. K.

15. I thought I read about it in this forum but now I can't
remember where I saw it. I did this just a few weeks ago! For me, it made only a slight difference but it smelled different when it was cooking.

The odd thing was I rarely have any root beer but bought some for one of the boys because it was on sale. I think someone posted about using it in one of the "What's For Dinner" threads.

For me, it's the sauce that has the most effect on the taste.

20. Bingo!
It did add just a slightly sweet taste to the meat but that was about it. Cover it with bbq sauce and it makes no diff at all.
