Need recipe for a certain chocolate chip pastry type thing
Edited on Wed May-26-10 11:33 PM by Duer 157099
I don't know what this is called, but growing up, they used to be at bakeries all the time and I think we just called them chocolate chip rolls or chocolate chip pastry.

It's not a croissant but it's rolled like one, and it has chocolate throughout the layers, and it's topped with a light colored not-too-sweet type of powdery substance.

I'm having the hardest time figuring out how to search for this.

Ooo, I think I just got a clue -- Rugalech or rugelach?

Edit: the ones I remember were not small but full-sized, and I don't think cream cheese was involved. And the topping was sort of like the kind you find on a good crumb cake, but very fine textured. Powdered sugar plus...butter?

1. Chocolate chip rugelach
and you can do a pretty good quickie version by rolling out puff pastry, cutting it, sprinkling it with chocolate chips, and rolling it up. Just be aware that it works better if you chop the chips into smaller pieces. Then bake until they are slightly puffed and brown on top.

Sprinkle the tops with confectioner's sugar when they're done. Or granulated sugar if you like them sweeter but not quite so pretty.

2. I already have some dough made that will work
and I've got some really good unsweetened chocolate that I'm going to melt down and add some sugar (1T per 1oz).

But now the topping is really hanging me up. I wasn't just sugar, it was beige clumpy powdery, not quite like crumble but almost.

Melted butter plus powdered sugar maybe?

3. Crumble mix
is a mixture of flour, butter and sugar.

Personally, I like granulated sugar on top. I'll do powdered sugar if I'm feeding it to somebody I want it purty for.

4. Thanks Warpy
I just guessed and went ahead and melted some butter and added powdered sugar to it and then when it was cool, mixed in some flour til it looked like what I remember.

They're chilling right now and soon will be baking so this grand experiment will soon have a result. I hope it's what I'm thinking, but then, I doubt it could be bad considering the ingredients, :D

5. Nothing you make with chocolate and puff pastry
will ever suck unless you forget it and incinerate it.

6. Well this isn't puff pastry, it's the dough from the homemade poptart thread
but the point remains the same...
