Fiddle head ferns
Any New Englanders getting ready to enjoy them? I've got several poking up in my Midwestern yard....not enough to make a meal though. I certainly enjoyed them in the spring when I lived in NH though.

1. I'm a New Englander and I'll eat just about any veggie except......
Fiddle head ferns. There is just something about the way they look that makes me shudder. I can't imagine how you'd clean them.

2. Sounds good to me.
I've never had them, because I never heard about eating ferns when they were just fiddleheads. Dang it all anyway, I bet they are tasty!

We have ferns every year in our northern MN backyard, I suppose I should go look, huh? They grow on the edge of the woods, so I suppose they are growing under the leaves right now, as we speak I bet. Do you rake the leaves to find them, or gently hand lift the leaves and look?

Oh, this sounds like fun - a new spring delicacy that I never knew about.

Thanks!

3. 3 signs of spring
Fiddleheads, ramps, and morels.

Poke is actually delicious, too, but must be boiled in a couple of changes of water. Tastes like a cross between aspargus and spinach.

4. Boiled poke?
No, no, no.

Use small tender stalks. Take the stalk and remove the leaves. Clean the stalk. Slice it into bite size pieces. Pieces should be slightly damp. Roll in a mix of flour and cornmeal seasoned with salt and pepper. Fry until lightly browned using a lightly oiled skillet. Cook it just like you would fried okra.

Haven't had any poke in years. Granny used to fix a couple of messes every year.....
