I ordered a butter bell the other day.
Edited on Sat Feb-20-10 12:00 PM by hippywife
I've always wanted one, but kept forgetting since I don't usually see them as the only shopping I do is grocery if I can possibly help it.

I was flipping through a Bon Apetit at work the other day and saw an advert for this website;

www.butterbell.com

They are have different styles and are having a sale. I ordered on of the antique style in lavender.

Yikes! I forgot to check where they are made. I hope not China. Doesn't say on their site that I have seen. Guess I'll find out when it gets here.

Edit#2: Damn! I just called a local retailer and they looked at their stock and said they ARE made in China. :eyes:

1. That's pretty!
Mine's more cafeteria generic. :D I found it easier to change the water in it every day instead of every other day, though.

2. Thanx, Lars.
I do think it's pretty and I've wanted one for some time. Just the whole China thing ticks me off, especially when they don't tell you. I usually am careful to check these things out, but I was so excited to find one that was so pretty it totally slipped my mind.

Is it easier to change the water, or just better? Not having owned one before, I'm not sure why it would be easier.

:hi:

3. Mine recommended every other day,
but I got so I'd forget it, so I just started with every day...keeps it from molding. I'm kinda leery of stuff from China, too. :scared:

6. Pretty! Even if it IS made in China
I liked having one... till my dog stood up on the counter, licked it clean and knocked it on the floor and broke it!

And yes, it's a good idea to change the water every couple of days to stave off any mold. And I still kept it in the refrigerator during the hot summer months when I wasn't running the air conditioning all day, cause it would still get kinda melty. Some people have trouble with the butter "falling out" of the little bowl - I found that if the butter was a little soft and I mushed it in real good, it stayed.

Glad you found one so pretty. I know you'll like it.

7. Hi, B.
It's just so hard to get away from things made in China anymore, especially where kitchen wares are concerned. Exactly the place I DON'T want it.

Sorry your puppy broke yours. There are less expensive models on Amazon, by about half the price, if you want another one.

:hi:

11. My ex-MIL sent me a check when she sold her condo with wishes
that I would spend it on a few things to make my life more comfortable so I went shopping to replace pots & pans, dishes, glasses, flatware, etc., that hadn't been upgraded since we were married in 1979. We NEVER shop Walmart, but looked at Linens N Things, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Chefs Exchange, and other places trying to find anything made in the USA. OUt of all the merchandise we shopped and all the merchants where we shopped, the only item we were able to find that were not made in China was the flatware and even then it MAY have been made in China but it also MAY have been made in the USA. It's frustrating! That being said, your butter bell is really cute. :loveya:

It is very frustrating. Nearly everything for the kitchen is made in China. Lodge's regular cast iron made here, but their enameled cast iron is made in China. I'm may be looking to replace the enameled cast iron dutch oven I broke, and right now I'm looking at Fontignac which is made in France and only half the price of Le Creuset.

It is a cute butter bell, and I do like it. I just don't know if I want to use it now. I've taken it out of the box but I've not even washed it yet. I've been sick for over a week now with this stupid upper respiratory thing going around, so I haven't done much of anything. We'll see how I feel about it when I get better. :eyes:

:loveya:

Oh! And biggo congrats on getting to re-outfit your kitchen with new stuff. What fun!

15. So sorry you aren't feeling tip-top.
I have a new suggestion for a 'hot toddy'. A nice cuppa hot green tea with a shot of Canton (ginger+VSOP Cognac) liqueur. Even if you don't have chest congestion, it's a tasty way to relax.

Take care! :loveya:

10. I love my butter bell. Unfortunately, half the year it's too warm to use it,
and the rest of the time because it's just me and I consume little butter on things, it tends to get moldy before I use it up, lol.

But I still love the idea.

12. "Made in China"
It is almost impossible to avoid. I always assume things are made in China and then ask for alternatives. I am rarely successful.

13. This is the one that I use
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 05:27 PM by TommyO

I had just gotten my bonus and it called to me at Williams-Sonoma. When I used it for Easter dinner, I immediately made converts out of both my mother and sister-in-law. Soft, spreadable butter? It was a hit.

Edited to add: Made in France!
