cheap and easy grape jelly
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 02:54 PM by ginnyinWI
You know how most of the grape jellies at the store are made with high fructose corn syrup? And the ones made only with sugar are much more expensive? Like over $4 a jar? I just made three jars of grape jelly in about five minutes. It took 2 cups bottled unsweetened grape juice, 3 1/2 cups sugar and one pouch of liquid fruit pectin. I used one pot, one wooden spoon, and one metal ladle. I made three jars of grape jelly at about $1 each!

Most of the work of making your own jellies and jams is in the fruit prep. I know, I've made apple butter and strawberry-rhubarb jam the long way. Using juice is so easy! I don't can, so I'm not going to can these jars either, although you could--there are directions. I will just keep them in the fridge until we use them, along with my jars of bread and butter pickles and apple butter.

I always save jars so I had three that were the right size. One is a regular canning jar and the others are from commercial jellies.

2. I just received a bag of grapes and they are seeded. Can I use
this recipe with seeded grapes?

3. in the fruit pectin package, there are instructions
for how to use fruit for jellies and jams. I'm sure you can use grapes--but you might need to alter the amount of sugar or fruit because this was a bottled juice recipe. But it's all in the instructions. Have fun!
