Good dog treat recipes, anyone?
I like to make treats every once in a while and I'm looking for something new to try. Any of you have ideas to share?

Thanks.

3. Looks good, but. . .
don't they have a laxative effect? I know canned pumpkin is a great remedy if your dog is constipated or you're worried about a bowel obstruction.

For pet treats, I like the recipes in Dr. Pitcairn's book.

4. I thought pumpkin was good when a dog has
diarrhea.

The recipe makes about 48 bars so each one doesn't have a lot of pumpkin in it

5. Oooh--you're right
It has fiber, which I suppose could make it useful either way. I was just going off the top of my head because my dog had suddenly stopped crapping at all and that was the first thing I was instructed to give her to see if it would make her go. That'll teach me to just blurt out something off the top of my head, huh? :eyes:

8. Thanks! I was thinking about pumpkin...
I've always heard it was good for dogs. Had no idea on the laxative effect, lol. But my beasts have good access to the outdoors.

I have all of those ingredients so I can whip up a batch today.

THANKS!!!

2. This one is very popular

I make them and sell them as a fundraiser for my rescue group. I tried several different recipes and this was the overall doggie favorite

BARK B Q BONES

2 cups whole wheat flour
½ cup oatmeal
½ cup wheat germ

2 TBS vegetable oil
½ cup water
¼ cup bbq sauce ( I use Sweet Baby Rays)

Preheat oven to 350. Combine dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, combine wet ingredients then add to dry ingredients.

Roll dough to ¼ in thick, cut with cookie cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 35 min.

Makes 2 ½ dozen

(Original recipe says 375 degrees but they burn quickly at that temp in my oven)

6. Salmon based treats

Cats might like these, too

Chance’s Choice Chops

Puree a can of salmon in a food processor
Add about a clove of garlic
And 1 - 2 cups of flour until you get a doughy consistency that you can spread in a pan
Press to about ¼ - ½ inch thick in the pan
Score with a knife

Bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes.

Store in airtight container in fridge or freeze what you won‘t use in a few days.

12. Here's my rescue group's Facebook Cause page
http://apps.facebook.com/causes/293887

If anyone is inclined to make a small donation (tax deductible) it would be greatly appreciated !

We are struggling in this economy. More and more people are giving up their pets due to loss of their homes or inability to afford vet care. We have several dogs with cancer in more or less permanent foster care. Now we've lost our line of credit.

We're trying facebook to see if we can raise a few dollars that way.

I make and sell collar style bandannas as a fundraiser and also the homemade dog treats (locally - most would not ship well)

Thanks !
