Any good, basic curry recipes I can make for my elderly parents?
inspired by this DU thread:
"Weekly curry 'may fight dementia' (BBC)"

Come to think of it, I could use a weekly curry dish or two myself!

1. Do they like curry?
It's usually best not to believe everything you read, but if someone likes curry, hey, go for it, I say.

Around here, we get nice red and green curry sauces from Trader Joe's. They're very good, and it couldn't be simpler.................

4. There are several curcumin trials going on
I'll wait until the results are in, thanks. Too many things look great in a test tube and later prove to be at best ineffective and at worst dangerous.

Personally, I'm more of a fan of curry in Thai cooking than Indian.

I also throw a dash into fresh tomato sauce to give it that day later flavor.

5. What I've heard has been from Pakistanis,
who say its been known as a health+ for ages! No trials!

Of course, 'curry' is a combo of ingredient. 'Most recipes and producers of curry powder usually include coriander, turmeric, cumin, and fenugreek in their blends. Depending on the recipe, additional ingredients such as ginger, garlic, fennel seed, cinnamon, clove, mustard seed, green cardamom, black cardamom, mace, nutmeg, red pepper, long pepper, and black pepper may also be added.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curry_powder

I threw it together once, when I ran out of generic 'curry powder.'

6. Interesting ...........
You throw curry powder into tomato sauce?

Just plain tomato sauce? The kind that later become marinara sauce, or something else?

And I'm with you on preferring Thai curry to Indian. That's the bottled Curry Sauce we get at Trader Joe's.

Interesting idea, curry and tomato sauce...................

8. Yes, just a little bit, not enough to taste it as curry
but just enough to have people wondering why your tomato sauce is so different.

My mother the hostile cook found that in a newspaper back in the 50s and it's one of the really good things she did.

3. I put turmeric on my morning eggs
It just adds a nice bold burnt orange color. LOL.

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and I use it especially if I've eaten stuff I'm sensitive to the day before.

I love making Thai curries with coconut milk, lime, basil and chili peppers, but you could tone that down for your parents if they aren't pepper heads. The basic sauce is very delish.

7. Curry powder is great in many types of soup
I like it in butternut squash soup and split pea soup in particular.

9. I have a bottle of Garam Marsala from Penzey's Spices that
I add to squash dishes. Also add to rice dishes. It has a mouthwateringly good flavor and is very mild. You might just try adding it to a few of the dishes they now enjoy and see how that turns out. My mother added a bit to deviled eggs and also made a vegetable dip using curry powder, mayo and mustard, though since I don't eat mayo, I never tried it and couldn' tell you the proportions.

10. It is so weird I would luck up on this thread!
I have been eating a ton of curry lately. I have always loved it but got away from using it. I am back with a vengeance!
