Basa fish
Anyone cook this before? If you did, how?

I bought it at Sunflower food market yesterday because I never tasted Basa before (and I am a risk taker with new foods). I read it is part of the catfish family (I don't care for catfish) but also read it does not taste like catfish or smell like fish.

Anyone have experiences with Basa?

1. We've had it. It's quite good.
I didn't know it was in the catfish family. It tasted great! It is a semi-firm, flaky white fish (more like halibut than cod) that is not strong in either taste or smell. It tastes like your imagination says fish should taste. No strong flavors and none of that oily dark streak of flesh along the side that some fish have.

When we try a new fish, we just do it with some lemon pepper salt and some butter pats, and bake it. That's the best way (we think) to "taste" a fish. Basa was good and we've bought it a many times since then. And prepared it many different ways.

I think you'll like it (assuming it wasn't mishandled somewhere along the way).

2. The Basa was delicious
it tasted a little like perch to me. I'll buy it again. The one good thing, my house did not smell like fish after fixing it.

What bothered me when I read about it on the internet, the sites all say it is from Viet Nam. Nothing against Viet Nam but rather have something from within our own country and state. Sunflower assured me the Basa was from an in state fish farm.
