Well, I had a nice long post about notes I had looking at this pie cookbook, but I pouffed it.
I picked up this book for free a couple of days ago at our recycling center. It's really delish with some unusual recipes for both dessert pies and savory pies.
Some gems:
Instead of serving a slice of cheese with your apple pie, bake some grated cheese right into the crust.
In certain instances, a kind of sugar cookie makes a great crust.
You can also add nuts to a crust to make them more crunchy.
Speaking of nuts, there's a fab recipe for black walnut pie, the same as pecan pie, but with black walnuts instead.
There's a "Snow Storm" squash pie, a basic egg custard with pureed squash and grated sweet potatoes.
Apple Butter and Pumpkin Pie is a basic pumpkin pie w/ Apple Butter.
Some interesting mincemeat pies, even venison mincemeat!
There are refridgerator pies, and ice cream pies, even pies with meringue and marshmallow fluff "crusts." I have to admit I've never eaten a MF outer shell. :crazy:
Some good breakfast "pies": Egg and potato, Egg and Ham, Egg and sausage (Quite a few of these are played up as being "pizza-like" to appeal to teenagers. I remember the days when the pizza delivery guy didn't come out this far. ;-)
Other savory pies: Asparagus and chicken, Eggplant and chuck (I don't see why you couldn't turn either completely veggie.
"Canadian" pies: Pork and cranberry
There's a huge selection of stuff and all fun and worthwhile. If anybody has any requests, I'd be happy to see if they are in this book and post them here. Browsing through cookbooks is one of my favorite hobbies. ;-)
